I watched you! All you did was replace a washer! I want an itemized bill!" The plumber takes back the bill and scribbles on it. He hands it back. It now says "New washer....50¢. Knowing how to do it, $149.50." ... |

Exactly!
I recently had someone ask me about doing some artwork for him. I wasn't sure about what price to ask, and the guy didn't really know what would be fair. He told me to get back with him with a price. I asked a couple of friends what they thought. One asked me, "How long does it take to draw it?"
I stopped him right there.
"How long is pretty much moot," I said, "as it may take me only a few minutes or an hour, but someone else might not be able to do the same drawing, at all."
I don't want to sound like a jerk, but there's a difference between doing work that everyone can do, and doing skilled work or even something unique.
What do you other artists think?
By the way, JB, I love your variant commission, too!
