From APNews, September 22, 2024:

>> Former President Donald Trump grew up a mainline Presbyterian but began identifying as a nondenominational Christian near the end of his presidency. ...Strikingly, that appears to matter little to part of Trump’s loyal base: white evangelical Protestants. ...“They really don’t care about, is he religious or not,” said R. Marie Griffith, a religion and politics professor at Washington University in St. Louis. She pointed to a white evangelical culture that takes care of its own, but sees liberal outsiders as evil, and therefore, support for a Democrat is unimaginable to many.

Evangelical leaders, she said, are pushing this idea that, “this is God’s man, and we can’t ask why. We don’t have to ask why. It doesn’t matter if he’s moral, it doesn’t matter if he’s religious. It doesn’t matter if he lies compulsively. It’s for the greater good that we get him re-elected.”

Anthea Butler, professor of religious studies at the University of Pennsylvania, said white evangelicals likely see him as instrumental to their goals, such as his appointment of conservative, anti-abortion justices to the Supreme Court. ...“He’s their guy no matter what,” said Butler.<<

I would say, that there is a big difference in how American and British
Christians view this man. This is from personal experience

Trumf is quoted as saying he needs “the kind of generals Hitler had.”

The kind that lost?

Fascists never seem to understand that fascism is 100% doomed to fail. Which would be great, if the cost of its self-immolation wasn't the nation that it infected.

"The kind that lost?"

Also, if memory serves, the kind that tried to have Hitler
killed?

Before John Kelly (the source of that Hitler's generals quote, among other batshit Trump statements) stepped in as Chief of Staff, Trump's ship was foundering, precariously. In retrospect, I don't know whether it was an act of patriotism for him to right it or... would it have been better to let it sink?

Apparently Trump's personal Judge, Cannon, is on the shortlist for Attoney General.

If a vacancy opens during a second Trump term, Cannon would be a shoo-in for the Supreme Court.  If there's one thing an incompetent loves, it's others who are just as incompetent.

Cannon is clearly corrupt and amoral, but I don't think she's incompetent - she's gotten exactly the results her patrons were looking for.

I wonder what it would be like if the SCOTUS judges were elected.

One thing that's been tickling the back of my brain is that so much of the popular entertainment of the last forty years has been very clear about the need to combat fascism and to thwart the charismatic leaders that spearhead those movements before they achieve their ultimate goals.

Star Wars: Fascism is Bad
Harry Potter: Fascism is Bad
Lord of the Rings: Fascism is Bad

So how is it that vast swaths of not only hardcore but general fandom not only misses that message but are actively drawn to the openly proto-fascist Trump?  Have they missed the point of these films, or have I?
