Ari, when commissioning these Batman pieces, do you already have a good idea of how the artist is going to draw the character?  Do you prefer for a muscular or slimmer version?

Wilson, I prefer to have the artists do their version of Batman, so I generally give little to no guidance

Thanks Flavio.  Wilson's question got me thinking, how much input do you guys give artists you commission?  Do you say I want Batman on a gargoyle or I want Neal Adams Batman in a drak alley in the rain grimmacing?

"Wilson's question got me thinking, how much input do you guys give artists you commission?"

I try not to give too much.  With my Byrne commissions here's the extent of my instructions:

Spider-Man/Man-Thing cover reimagining...that's it!  Jim Warden even e-mailed to ask me some more specifics and I just said, "Let JB decide."

Orion vs Kalibak-  I gave reference to two covers (one Kirby and one by Simonson) that I wanted JB's interpretation of.  I asked for Orion vs Kalibak with Black Racer in the background.  Everything else was Byrne.

Just received from Anthony Castrillo, approximately 17x14.  Not a commission, I just got lucky when he posted it on his CAF and picked it up.  Thanks MAC!

Sounds like sound reasoning, Joe.

If I ever get around to playing the commission game, I know quite a few "scenes" I'd like to commission from JB. But those scenes are fairly simple in how I conceive of them. Why should I tell JB how to make the picture work, when he can do that much better on his own, right. That said, I think I'd might almost write certain extra amounts of "freedom" into my specifications if ordering a commission from JB. At least one of the "scenes" in my head could be done as anything from full figure almost up to facial close ups of the characters, and I think the specification of such a freedom may be good, to let JB know that a few non-full figures would actually not be considered a bad deal (I mean just look at one or two of the Galactus commissions in the gallery that aren't full figure, and tell me those aren't beauties).

Anthony Castrillo does some really nice work..i like his montages, buit this is extra nice.

As far aa commissions go, i typically let the artists do their thing as they have the talent, i'm only the pay.  In the last 2 though, i have felt comfortable enough in asking for specifics, but that's because i was comfortable asking the artists involved for the changes.  In my upcoming Guy Davis one, the particular pose of the charaters was the whole reason for the commission.
