I wonder if there was as much scrutiny with Donner's Superman deviating from the source material when it came out, or was everyone so enamored with how good it was that they just overlooked it all.

Donner’s version deviated only on the window dressing. All the important points were there. Krypton as an advanced but myopic culture. Jor-El as something of a rebel. The planet’s destruction. Smallville and the Kents.

Most significantly, motivations were not altered.

It's funny to me when you talk about how "Superman as the 'stranger in a strange land'" immigrant concept was introduced later, by Julie Schwartz in the 1970's. At the time he took over, Superman had been published for something like 33 years. The concepts introduced by Schwartz have been part of the story now for approaching 60 years, although obviously different creators made that less of a focus than others.

Julie ramped up the sci-fi elements, which oddly had been deep background for Superman.
