JB: Not inked, but for some reason the scan was very light, so I darkened it in Ps. A bit too much, perhaps!

No, I think the effect is really cool! It gives a Surfer a certain weight as he's coming down toward the battle that... I don't know, it just gives him a distinct "edge" as he enters the story.

Love when guest stars appear.•• I love that it's so easy to do! I've told the story of back when Chris and I were doing MARVEL TEAM UP, and grew tired of using twelfth place villains. We wanted some real Spider-Man bad guys, and for a start, we asked the Spider-Office if we could use Kraven the Hunter. No, we were told. The Spider-Writer had plans for Kraven. . . . . in four years! At this point Shooter made himself useful. He declared that no characters could be tied up for long periods waiting for stories that might or might not happen. So Chris and I got to use Kraven. (Something similar happened at DC. I asked the Swamp Thing office if I could use him in ACTION COMICS. Their answer was, basically, "No! No way! Never! Oh, by the way, we're using Luthor." To which my response was "No! Too soon! I've barely begun defining the character!" To which their response was "Already did it." There, alas, no one in the Powers That Were was prepared to intervene on my behalf.)

I've said this many times before and it's worth repeating:
ELSEWHEN has been one of a handful of things that has put a smile on my face during these trying times.
This feels like a MARVEL series through-n-through.
JB always gives us a great portrayal of the Silver Surfer.

At some point, it would be really neat if they did an IDW artist's series - but I hope that point is really far away (i.e. I hope we're getting issues for as long as JB cares to produce them).

I literally said “OH, SHIT!” out loud when I opened the latest page. So loud that my GF front the other room asked me “what’s wrong?”
Nothings wrong. Everything is amazing!
The Silver Surfer on these pages!?
So the Surfer sensed the Phoenix before...but didn’t respond? Hmmm.... That makes sense that he would “feel” something as powerful as the Phoenix/Dark Phoenix operating on Earth. Let’s see if he can handle it.
AND ITS ONLY TUESDAY!!!

Its funny, because JB has also solved the 'why didn't the FF and the Avengers show up to help with Phoenix question' - because they're at the hospital dealing with the Sentinel fall out!

Definitely a WOW moment seeing the Silver Surfer for today's page. Love the last panel with him descending toward Earth.

So the Surfer sensed the Phoenix before...but didn’t respond? Hmmm....•• This page is something of an apology to fans who were there when the original Dark Phoenix Saga unspooled itself in the pages of UNCANNY X-MEN. When Dark Phoenix manifested, I drew this page...
Chris, once again writing beyond my intent, scripted what you see at lower left. And next month, when the Surfer did NOT show up to "aid" Phoenix, there were a lot of unhappy--and justifiably pissed off--readers.

The first time, they didn't show up because... reasons. Mainly, back in those days the Marvel Universe was not nearly so inbred and incestuous (literally in some cases) as it has become. Everything didn't have to be touching everything else. So, altho it was a "shared universe", it was understood that characters would be allowed to deal with their own problems in their own books.

That makes sense. If not, you're busy explaining why every single issue isn't crammed with guest stars.
I never had a problem with the simple answer, 'Cuz this is the X-Men's book, that's why...'
