I'd seen Uncanny X-Men mentioned, but in certian areas of
the U.K. "Canny" means clever, i assumed Uncanny meant the
opposite so thought it was a parody title. It wasn't until
i saw a copy of issue #113 with J.B.'s beautiful cover that
i bought a copy and was blown away!

I called Namor the "Sub-Mareener" at school once and some kid corrected me.  Obviously, I'd heard the word "marine" pronounced many times, but not "mariner."  Still, the correct version immediately sounded right and I adjusted my pronunciation with no problem.

To this day, I still find it hard to believe that the name of the X-Men's arch-foe is pronounced "Mag-neato"!

I was a Sub-Mareener and Magnetto kid for a while.

And one of my favorite artists was Sal Boosk-a-muh. His Brother, John, was no slouch, either. They both drew the Hulk well. So, did Herp "Trimp".

It never occurred to me, though, that Byrne would be pronounced any other way but "burn".

What a rare and special creature you are, Brian.

My name has been so mangled thru my life that when I began to pursue a career in comics I gave brief but serious thought to doing so as JON BURN.

I had known that the musician David Byrne was Burn but regarding JB I  was "corrected" that he was Buy-earn.

My father pronounced it BERN. Dunno how, but the distinction was clear.

Long ago I would introduce myself as “Byrne, as in flame.”

I'm hearing "Bern" in John Houseman's voice and like the beginning of Bernard.

I remember the first time I met JB the profound question I'd been waiting YEARS to ask was 'why did Terry Austin sign the X-Men 142 cover instead of you?" to which you said 'because I didn't draw the X-Men 142 cover, Terry did.'

Which makes sense :)

In my early years reading comics, I labored under the impression that the "Marvel Bullpen" was literally where all the artists and writers and letterers and colorists worked to make comic books. I imagined a big open space full of drawing boards in a skyscraper in midtown Manhattan, with a few offices over by the windows for guys like Archie Goodwin (and Stan, of course--that's where he wrote Bullpen Bulletins every month).

My only frame of reference for "bullpen" at that age would have been the baseball kind, and how I would have gotten from that to a sort of Santa's Workshop arrangement with Stan Lee running the place instead of Kris Kringle, I do not know.

If it makes you feel any better, Ted, I think that was a
fairly common picture of the Bullpen in many young readers
heads. I know it was mine!

When I first visited Marvel, in ‘71, I was shocked to find the whole office was maybe 500 square feet!

Considering you are of retirement age, 16-year-old me from the mid 90’s has some sad news for you - it’s actually pronounced “bye-ruh-nay,” he’s absolutely certain.
