I would think that Wonder Man's brother (The Grim Reaper) would be the perfect fit as his arch-nemesis.

I'd agree.

I think one of the main jobs of a creator/writer is to give a new character a good supporting cast and a good rogues gallery.  Without both those things, the series might soon be cancelled--and often are!

I feel like Stan Lee didn't give DAREDEVIL either--he saved all the good villains for Spider-Man and only gave DD a supporting cast of two.  DD's early villains were either borrowed from Spider-Man (Electro) or were Batman villains rip-offs (Owl/Penguin, Purple Man/Joker, Jester/Joker, Mr. Fear/Scarecrow).  I think Wally Wood "righted the ship" in his short time with a great redesign and some solid foes that gave the book a certain "feel," but it really took Frank Miller to "finish" Daredevil's back story, rogues gallery, and supporting cast.

On the other hand, during Stan Lee's tenure, SPIDER-MAN got a hundred good villains and 20 or 30 recognizable cast members!  And Spider-Man took off like a rocket, while DD always seemed "on the bubble" until Miller took over.  Likewise, David Michelinie and Bob Layton "finished" IRON MAN--again, years after his creation.

I always thought of the Shadow Thief as Hawkman's top villain. (Possibly because my father owned his 2nd appearance and it was the only Hawkman comic in his collection.)

I don’t think Man-Thing was ever gifted an arch nemesis.  Nor the Silver Surfer.

Does the Doom Patrol have an arch villain?  I can’t think of one, but I haven’t read a ton of their books.

Funny, I don’t know much about Man-Thing, but I thought I “knew” his arch
nemesis was D’Spayre. Must be my habit of seeing everything through the
lens of the X-Men.

Back in the original Dazzler run, her most common enemy was Rogue, before Claremont utterly changed the character, age, and evil attitude of Rogue.

I actually don’t like the concept of a villain. I like a concept of a good character. Doom can be both the hero or villain, it depends on what he is up to.

Doom thinks he’s always the hero.

There's something to be said for writing characters with a view to their own motivation (e.g. how someone doing bad things may justify their actions, how they may view themselves as not being the bad guy, etc), but I'm also down with characters who are just straight up villains -- especially in superhero comics.

Watching Wicked recently, I was not convinced I needed to see a justification for why the WIcked Witch of the West was so bad. I can happily accept she's just plain bad.
