Surprised you're not giving Minnesota more thought, Matt. More Vikings home games for you!
I'm still 30 some years away from contemplating retirement. Will social security even be a thing at that point? Leaning towards no, but hey we'll see. Contributing towards a pension right now and employed with the largest county in Minnesota, maybe will seek a state job at some point. But have a long career ahead of me to navigate.

My wife and I have been having the conversation about where we want to go when we retire for the better part of a quarter century (i.e., about as long as we've been married). Still no goddamn idea. We're sort of like a bar patron around closing time - we don't have to go 'home' but we can't stay here.
Finances will no doubt play a part in the decision, though there's one interesting wrinkle in being childless and having no apparent heirs: we could go somewhere and NOT worry about the declining housing market eating into our estate. Retirement for us is essentially a zero-sum game to the grave.
A coworker of mine is retiring next year and moving to Portugal. It's an interesting choice, since neither he nor his wife are a) Portuguese, or b) Portuguese speakers. But it does make me think that Spain would be a nice option, and one that does align with our occasionally batted-about talk of moving to Taos or someplace similarly artsy in the American southwest. Though I do have to admit that at the back of my head, leaving seasons behind feels odd. Half my blood is from Rhode Island, and anytime I'm there it really does call to me.

We're giving Pennsylvania some serious thought in the long term, maybe the Bucks County region. Still somewhat commutable to NYC (and also Philadelphia), with lower taxes and it's actually a swing state so our vote would count more.

Don’t get me wrong! I love Minnesota. Tied with California as my favorite state. I don’t even mind the cold as it’s not nearly as cold there as when I grew up. Thank climate change for that. For the longest time, moving back to the Cities was my goal. Now, as I’ve gotten older, I’ve wondered if the friends I still have there (which are many) would have room for me on a regular basis. Easy enough when I visit once a year, but people have lives they’ve lived in the 34 years since I was a resident. I increasingly believe that you have less room in your life as you get older for more regular friends. My list of friends, which was once massive, has dwindled to a handful that I really consider close. Maybe I could rekindle that on a regular basis once I’ve settled in, but am uncertain of that.
The one place my wife and I can agree on is Chicago. Love that city. Not a fan of the state, but Chicago? Wonderful. I’ve spent a ton of time there. My wife finally joined me a couple of years ago and she immediately fell in love with it. That said? It’s just as expensive to live as LA. We wouldn’t be saving much if at all. But we would be much closer to my bestie, Bob Simko. That in and of itself is a giant plus. I could also drive the six hours to Minneapolis or take a cheap flight and be there in a couple hours.

Agreed. That lake effect snow is no joke! For me, I can handle it. Growing up in the coldest state of the contiguous 48 preps you for that. My wife? Never lived in a cold weather state. The two times she’s come with me was during the summer. I need to take her in November or December, which is when I typically visit.

Vinny, I grew up in lower Bucks County. Beautiful area. Haven't been back in years, but great place to be a kid.

Chicago is great to visit. I am not sure I would want to live there. When I was younger, I might have, but at my ripe old age of 68, I don't think so. I was there over the summer, and the traffic reminded me of LA = no thanks.
After living in Los Angeles for 20+ years, we came back home to Wisconsin, and settled in Lake Country (maybe 25 miles outside of Milwaukee). I can get to Chicago in two hours, and Milwaukee in less than half of that. For what a home costs in LA, we could have purchased 2-3 here. And, I am talking about brick homes, with finished basements (with saunas), fireplaces, on large lots surrounded by trees.

I’ve been to Chicago once, in the height of summer. Humid as hell & twice as hot. With signs everywhere about not parking cars in certain areas when it snows. So hell in the summer & hell in the winter from the sounds of things.
I liked visiting, but could never live there.

Yeah, I get that. I think it just all depends on where you want to live. I could do the same in SD and actually double that 2-3 homes to 6. Couldn’t pay me to live in South Dakota. Ditto Wyoming. Ditto Idaho. Ditto Ohio, Arizona, Oklahoma, most of Texas and all of Nebraska. Just not my speed. Plus? Being a Minnesotan I’ve got an unnatural aversion to Wisconsin. Double that for Iowa!

I'm in my 60's now, as is my wife. We both work part time and like where we live, close to friends and family. I actually live two streets away from where i was born, and my mom still lives in that house. We often discuss moving to Devon once our elderly parents die. When on holiday we always look on eastate agent's (realtor's) windows at the properties. It would be lovely to retire there, but we have also looked at the cons. We would be far away from friends and family, if/when one of us dies we would be isolated from said friends and family (we have no children) We live within 7 miles of 3 hospitals, in Devon we'd be about 20 from the nearest one. it would be difficult to get onto a doctor's and dentists list (I know this from talking to someone who DID make the move) In summer it would be hellishly busy with tourists. So in reality i think we'll stay put in our cosy home, and just take more holidays.

I suspect you’ve never been to Florida in July. Trust me. I lived there for seven years in the 90s and there is no place more humid nor more oppressive than mid-state Florida in the middle of summer. Not even Houston, where my wife’s parents live. Nowhere.
