I think they can be fun!

While I tend to be against ever giving the Joker a "real
name", I thought that the '89 Burton movie giving him the
name "Jack Napier (a play on "jackanape")" was kinda
clever.

I hated it. Installs a big dollop of coincidence the character didn’t need. Like the way Bruce Banner and Harvey Dent received retconned MPDs.
