A very strong argument could be made that the Avengers starts when Cap joins the team and thus issue #4 is vital. It's almost like the first three issues could be numbered -2, -1 and 0. I wonder if it was the plan all along to bring Cap into the mix or if the thought occurred to Stan and Jack after issue #1.

I think Gundars and I are on the same wavelength. We were writing our posts at the same time. =)

They really seemed to be making things up as they went.

The first issue of THE AVENGERS has a Sept 1963 cover date, which would have put it on sale some time around June of that year.

Three months after that first issue hit the stands, THIS appeared…

…which Stan described, in the issue, as a "test" to see if modern readers wanted Cap back.

Now, assuming things were being done on a normally realistic schedule for that time, Stan and Jack would have produced that STRANGE TALES story, in order to hit an August on sale, sometime between March and May of 1963, The fourth issue of THE AVENGERS, done on about the same schedule, would have been produced sometime around July/August of 1963.

This doesn't tell us very much -- except that Stan and Jack would likely have been working on AVENGERS 4 very close to the time STRANGE TALES 114 was hitting the stands. Given Cap's prominence in following AVENGERS issues, the response to his "return" in ST was either phenomenal, or the "test" was just standard Stan hype, and they were planning to bring him back all along.

If they were working a bit tighter on their deadlines, say four months ahead of publication instead of six, then there is room for response to ST 114 to have actually caused the story in AVENGERS 4.

Too much detective work, for me! And Stan, of course, would not likely remember!

With the sheer number of books Stan was writing at the time I figured he didn't think too far ahead. I think he did very little planned over the long term because so many stories contained in a single issue.

I had never known the STRANGE TALES 114 was a "test" for Stan. It is hard for me to imagine a time when Stan Lee had to find justification or turn to market research for anything he did. I am of an age where comics were a dominate product and Stan Lee did whatever he wanted. Then the meteor hit and comics became almost extinct.

As the story goes, Captain America is Stan's favorite character, so I don't imagine he'd need too much of an excuse to bring him back, especially given that the Human Torch and Namor were already part of the embryonic MU. If there was a "test", it might have been Stan checking to see if fans were up for another trip to that particular well so soon.

At one point, I tried to recreate the cover to Avengers #4 for a friend.
The legs and shield kept tripping me up. As drawn by Kirby, it doesn't
look like it should work. It wasn't until I saw the statue of Cap in the
pose, that I could wrap my head around it.
