I didn't watch it but I read that they focused almost entirely on vapid discussion and debates, like American flag pins, etc. I also read that the audience booed after the debate, which probably didn't get on the official broadcast.
I wonder though, why didn't Obama or Clinton ask them to ask real questions, instead of the tabloid crap?
I prefer Canadian debates. In them, the hosts will ask someone a question and then stand back as they go after each other. An actual debate. There has been some legendary debates and it makes a real difference in the polls.

I thought that the moderators did a good job.
********************************
It took just over 50 minutes before they acked any questions of substance!! Prior to that, it was just rehashing crap that's been rehashed to death now. Stuff, by this point, had been dealt with...
Here's the Washington Post's review: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/04 /17/AR2008041700013_pf.html

I'm pleasantly surprised that people in general NOTICED that the debate was a big ol' piece of poo.

" But, that's what you get when the moderators are from a tabloid morning show and a former member of President Clinton's cabinet."
Last I checked, Charles Gibson is the anchor of ABC's World News and George Stephanopolis was only an advisor to Clinton, not part of the cabinet.
That correction being made, I didn't see the debate. I was at dinner with friends. But from the coverage I've read about the debate, it seems that people are upset that the questioning lacked substance. I looked at the footage I've seen as a chance for both candidates, especially Obama to put to rest some of the issues that have people bothered. And instead of being able to use their pat answers, they were forced to have to think about the questions and give an unscripted response.
I do think that it was wrong to have Stephanopolis as one of the moderators, given his history in the Clinton administration.

Good point Kevin. I just remembered earlier today while reading the Post that I got home a little late Wednesday night and missed the first 30 minutes of the debate. My opinion wasn't influenced by the bad questions and directions that apparently opened the program.

Especially when he was posing questions to Sen. Clinton in the form of "I
know you don't want to talk about (difficult situation A), so I'm going to ask
you (fluffy softball B)..."

If anyone ever asks me "I'm not questioning your patriotism, but do you believe in the flag?" because I don't wear a flag pin, there's gonna be trouble.

How does wearing the flag make you more patriotic?
I've never understood that.

What the hell does "do you believe in the flag" mean, anyway? Do you
believe it exists? Do you believe it's magic? WTF?

I still remember the feeling in the pit of my stomach when the flags started appearing on vehicles. It was an unease that culminated in the 2002 State of the union address (the "Axis of Evil" bullshit). Anyway, it was sometime in October 2001 when I was looking at a patient's chart that a nurse I knew approached me with an order sheet of flag pins and basically started her pitch with "how many can I put you down for?"
It was a very weird time. I hope it's nearly over.
