I was with McCain on the economy, split the vote on Iraq, with McCain on healthcare, with Obama on immigration, and with Obama on the hot topics. Very interesting!

On nearly every quote, I sided with Obama. I split on Iraq and the Economy.

Nice little quiz Gene.
I was with McCain on the economy and Iraq. Health and Immigration were split. On the hot topics I was 3 with Obama and 2 with McCain with an overall match with McCain.

The biggest thing I disagreed with Obama on was Iraq. I hate that we're there. I hate that we've entered into this war. I don't, however, think that we can bail just because we don't like it. We got ourselves into that mess, we've entangled ourselves with the people of Iraq, so I don't think it wise to pull out like we did with Vietnam and let everything go to hell in a hand basket. I think the surge that McCain touts is just a band-aid on the situation and I certainly can't put into words what I think should happen, but I don't think anyone will be well served by an immediate troop withdrawal.
Other than that, I went McCain on tax cuts for middle Americans and a balanced budget. I really didn't agree with either of the statements on gay marriage as both took great pains to say how they thought marriage should be between a man and a woman. Thought that wrong from both straight off, so I went with what was closest to my belief which is granting everyone the same rights even if it's not called the same thing. Didn't want to just leave it up to individual states to decide.

If DOMA is repealed or overturned, theoretically, that would be a gateway
for gay marriage.

Yep. Gay marriage isn't going to happen on a national level until it happens in a significant number of states first.

It doesn't matter HOW many states decide for it. Until it's accepted at a national level, we can't file our taxes as "married." One can't file one's state taxes with a different marital status than one files federal. In other words, even if states accept it, my partner and I can't file a joint state tax return and then file individual federal. It's NOT A STATE ISSUE, no matter how badly they want to duck it.
I know, I know... small steps, right? Still, it's about inequality, DOMA or not.

That was my point. In that quiz, neither candidate really expressed what I believed, so I picked the one that was closest to how I think. Since I didn't think it was a state-by-state issue, I dismissed that option.

Sorry if I seem a little aggressive, Matt. It's a frustrating issue for me -- go figure. I tend to react emotionally. My apologies if I offend.

And that's what it's all about, Ray -- not the Hokey Pokey. Most of the other "rights" can be fudged legally: wills, visitation rights, property ownership, but the tax thing is huge! Straight married couples get tax breaks that gay couples don't get. That's where the REAL inequality is: money.
Hooray to Montana for approving gay adoption legislation today! One more "red state" moving forward!
