I'd agree.  The hierarchy of the three for me would be (from worst to, uh, least worst):

  1. Chappaquiddick
  2. Shot in the face
  3. Hamilton-Burr

Seems weird to put the one where no one died in the middle, but there it is.

duel - a consensual fight between two people, with matched, usually deadly weapons in accordance with rules explicitly or implicitly agreed upon

Hunting - the practice of pursuing animals for food, recreation, or trade.

In a duel, you'd expect the other guy might be trying to shoot you.

So if your name is Cheney accidentally wounding a man is worse than killing one deliberately. I get it.

So the guy Cheney shot went on television and apologised for being shot? Or at least apologised for making Cheney upset? Really?

*******

The guys in the duel knew what they were getting into and what got me about Cheney is that they guy he shot had to go on TV and apologise for getting shot. That's what peeved me.

Yeah Neil it's true.

No one made him apologize. This is most of what he said

"For many years my family has been friends with the Armstrongs down in Kenedy County.  We have visited with them for over 25 years and have had some wonderful trips and visits – pleasant memories that we cherish forever.  However, this past weekend encompassed all of us in a cloud of misfortune and sadness that is not easy to explain – especially to those who are not familiar with the great sport of quail hunting.

We all assume certain risks in whatever we do, whatever activities we pursue.  And regardless of how experienced, careful and dedicated we are, accidents do and will happen – and that’s what happened last Friday.

I am very grateful and want to thank all the people that remembered me in their prayers and the kindness you have extend to my family that’s been here this week.

My family and I are deeply sorry for all that vice president Cheney has had to go through this past week. We send our love and respect to them as they deal with situations that are much more serious than what we’ve had this week.  And we hope that he will continue to come to Texas and seek the relaxation that he deserves."

I don't care if your name is Captain Phonebone...when two people agree to duel it's pretty obvious that one of them is getting shot.  Both participants know that going in.  But when you go hunting with your buddies everyone assumes it's the animals that will get shot, not the hunters.

So yes, when a guy gets shot in a duel where they were both trying to kill the other guy,  it's not as bad as when someone gets accidentally shot on a hunting trip by a drunk old man with a heart condition.

Your knowledge of dueling is seriously lacking. In the vast majority of duels in the early U.S. no one was killed.

I'm not about to parse dueling knowledge with you here, though I'd feel safe in crediting the majority of those non-deadly duels to adrenaline and inaccurate firearms.  My point, though, is that when you engage in a duel the objective of both parties is to shoot the other guy and inflict bodily harm...if not death.

At least that how we did it in my hood!

Hamilton knew going in that the guy with the gun was going to try and shoot him with it.  It was a friggin' duel!  The guy Cheney shot didn't.  The 2nd most powerful man in this country got drunk, picked up a gun and shot another man in the face.  Nice.

You have absolutely no proof that Cheney was drunk.

no, I don't.  but shooting a man in the face either makes him a blithering idiot or on the brink of senility.  drunk seems like the more likely option (credit where credit is due).
