As Peter Sagal reported, FEMA is sending emergency penthouses to Wall Street as quikly as possible.

Horace, I was wrong, it was in 2003 that Bush called Fannie and Freddie "a systemic risk" and called for reforms originally.  Obviously the guy doesn't go back and read his own quotes, ha ha.

And it's also correct that the Glass-Steagal repeal was a bi-partisan SNAFU.  Honestly I wonder if there's some way to sue the CEO's who knew it was coming and bailed out before it was public with their golden parachutes intact.  At least they finally got money out of the Enron ****ers didn't they?

Dems and Republicans both need to learn that just because some corporation throws money at you along with some platitudes doesn't mean they're going to deal with you honestly.  Heck, look at the 80s.  Reagan went around and asked these companies what it was going to take for them to invest in their workers, and long term infrastructure and they all said "tax cuts Ron!"  so the Tax cuts get passed but of course these companies now take their savings and do neither of the things they promised.  I did a paper on U.S. Steel back in my Poli-Sci days.  They basically used the money from the tax cuts to get out of the steel business.  They bought an Oil company, removed Steel from their company name, and closed factories.  Just the opposite of what they promised.

McCain has always been wary of corporations, of corporate welfare, of waste.  It made him the darling of Meet the Press and the NYT, especially when we directly went against the GOP and Bush...and they created and encouraged the Maverick meme.  But now he's a candidate against their guy, and it's been fun to seem them trying to deal with the monster they created.

McCain is no more a creation of the Left as Joe Lieberman is of the Right. In a virtual two-party monopoly of the political system, there inevitably are those whose views get them branded "maverick" or just plain crazy.

Oh, so $700 billion for the nonce -- and then another $[#] billion next month?

I've read figures as large as 1.3 trillion.

Perhaps that's why they don't want the agreement scrutinized by the courts.

This just in... House Conservatives balk at the bail out... at the last minute... after McCain arrives... this morning the market starts dropping... BREAKING news: McCain in closed door meetings... rushing across the Rotundra... I'm guessing there will be a newly brokered deal this morning. McCain will be the White Knight that pulled it all together. No politics involved.

Geoff, thanks for that. My favorite S&W moment was when they gave Milton Berle some advice on his performance.

"You're too close to the edge of the stage!"
Takes step back. "How's this?"
"Still too close!"
"How far back should I go?"
"Have you got a car?"
