Wait wait wait. The Republicans want people to think that she's good
enough to be one heartbeat away from the presidency, but that she can't be
trusted to handle the campaign herself for a day or two?
I never realized how much more demanding an election campaign was than
being 'leader of the free world'.
Wow.

Well, you don't get the personal chef until you get elected. Thats why when I am eligible to run in 2012 I'll be setting up the exploratory committee. Everybody wants the personal chef. And remember -- Palin fired hers!

Michael, like me, is a Friedman fan.

Consider me only 3/4 a fan, Geoff. But he's been knocking them outta the park of late.
All this hooplah over $700 billion, and it means nothing. I was working on a brief for a client who'd brought his company a $10 billion deal, and now, after a variety of criminal actions and civil suits, they're fighting over a $25 million insurance policy. This is one guy bringing one deal to one company. THESE are the elite!

Well I don't agree with him 100% of the time either, but I'd wager that the 25% the time you're not a fan, he at least makes you think!

They didn't ignore it. They simply refused to believe what you're shoveling them. The notion that what McCain is doing is somehow all for the good of the American people and damn his campaigning rings incredibly false. What it does ring of is "the original maverick" (as he's touting himself in his campaign ads) riding in on his white horse to deal with a situation that he normally wouldn't have much to do with if not running for president since he doesn't sit on the committee that is dealing with this crisis. To say that he's "doing what he's elected to do" shows a kind of naiveté that surprises me coming from you.

Was it last night that Jon Stewart noted McCain has missed more votes than even a senator fighting a stroke? And Obama has missed just a few less. I can't see McCain doing anything else than grandstanding with this delay-debate declaration.
Getting the two of them out in front of the American public as much as possible, confronting questions and each other -- nothing they can do is more important right now.

I support Obama for the election, but my first impression of McCain
suspending his campaign is that it was a masterstroke. Obama was the
first to reach out and say they should rise above politics, but McCain
outmaneuvered him politically by suspending the campaign. I don't think
any of us can say if McCain's motivations are political or from the heart,
but I can't deny he said and did exactly the right thing on Wednesday.
We are steeped in an unprecedented financial crisis and both senators
should be in Washington fulfilling their duties as senators. I understand
Bush called for a meeting with both of them today, which is exactly right.
Where McCain faltered is in calling to postpone the debate. The debates
should go on and should focus on the economy. Maybe changing the
subject at the last minute will avoid seeing prepackaged candidate
answers and instead see them think on their feet. It would be refreshing.
Calling to cancel this seems contradictory to McCain's approach. I
understand not hitting a bunch of fundraisers or speeches, but surely the
debate is the best way to get your opinions heard by the people and your
fellow lawmakers. So in a way not having the debate negates McCain's
smart approach of suspending the campaign.
I like what McCain did, but it doesn't change my vote. My views on our
country's future are best expressed and embodied by Obama. I'm proud
to have voted for him in the primary and will do so again in November.

We can debate McCain's sincerity or the merits of his approach until we're blue in the face. But it looks like it's all a moot point -- the various news outlets are reporting that a deal has been reached on the bailout plan. So unless things fall apart between now and tomorrow night, there's no reason why McCain wouldn't be in Mississippi for the debate.
