"Maybe. Or maybe it isn't a ploy at all. After all, voters did elect McCain to serve in the Senate. Maybe he's just doing the job he was elected to do."
Indeed, McCain is a Senator... but THIS particular crisis is being decided in commitee..specifically the Senate Banking Committee... Senator McCain is not on that committee. So, the question remains... what is he doing? Meeting with the President? Photo-op at best. Posturing? Possibly? Dodging the debate...? I am not sure.
Personally, I would like the opportunity to hear what both candidates for President...those who will overse ALL of the crisis left behind by the current administration...have to say. I want to make an informed decision.
Then again... I am just that kind of guy.

Judging by that clip from "The Late Show" that I linked to above, he's rushing to be interviewed by Katie Couric.

In fairness to McCain - while I think he's making a zag every time he should zig - if I were him, and had a limited time and could squeeze in one interview, you'd want it to be with a newsshow as opposed to a entertainment talk show.
But... he didn't have to lie to Letterman... and as Letterman and others have noted, he didn't have to rush back.
This was Obama's point - Obama said, you know, they've both got big fancy jets with their names and logos painted on them and full clearance to take off and land. If they need to make it to Washington DC for a key event, they can, in a short amount of time. The campaign can move forward. Stopping it seems like a showy move, done to show, you know, this ain't the party of Katrina or whatever, but instead of going showy, he should have just done the right thing.

Oh, forgot to add - and in the end, if he had to make that choice and pick between a news show and an entertainment show... while the news show would be the logical correct pick, he'd have to know the power Letterman weilds with public opinion. He had to know this will come back to bite him in the ass.
It didn't have to be a no-win. He could have told Letterman the truth - "Look, I only have time to do one - and I'm going with Katie Couric, but I promise you I'll make it up to you". Or he could have done neither - and sent a note to the press detailing why.
But no. More of the same from this guy. I honestly regret, early in this thread, saying nice things about McCain. While I never intended to vote for him, I did at least think he was a decent fellow.

Obama should have rushed back, after all the Senate Banking Committee is meeting to try to solve the crisis.
What's that? He's not on the Banking Committee? Someone should tell him. Oops!

Why did Mc Cain want to go away from the debate when he did the opposite at some previous time :

Health problem ( some people worries for his left eye )? the new US$ 5000 make-up artist not available ?

First lady Laura Bush said Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin lacks sufficient foreign policy experience but is a very quick study.
I never in my life, thought that being VP of the United States, would be an on the job training gig. :0P
he's rushing to be interviewed by Katie Couric
Come on people, it was Katie Couric, didn't you see the character assassination she did on Dan Rather

Seriously I don't think missing dave is as big a deal as saying I am suspending my campaign. Wake up McCain, we want to hear those debates and listen to what you have to say instead of what you feed us in your commercials. Make this first debate about the economy, we are in trouble and we need to hear what each of the candidates are planning to do about it, give us details about this bail out.
If McCain or Palin doesn't want to debate and inform the US citizens then get out of the way and let someone who does. If McCain doesn't debate this friday then I hope Obama offers to sit down with independent financial experts and discuss what we need to do to get us out of this mess and put it on TV. We need answers.
