Regarding the bailout, I'm don't know how even half-a-trillion will alleviate the problem. According to this site the amount outstanding of subprime debt is 1.3 trillion. Any business that is holding a significant amount of subprime securities operates under a cloud of suspicion by customers, partners and investors.
So if the Fed wants to solve the problem by buying up subprime mortgages, it's either A) clear up the balance sheets of a select group of companies and let the rest fail or B) save all the companies by spending close to 1 trillion, and hope that doesn't break the Treasury bill market.
Because if investors stop buying T-bills, then hoo-boy, I don't even want to think about that.

I don't think anyone has ever accused Bush of being any kind of mastermind. His critics have always painted him as a willing puppet of Cheney, Rove and the neocons. But conversely, he is not that stupid either, he plays up the dumb cowboy bit whenever it suits him.
Do I know the best way to address the current economic crisis? Nope. But does a government bail-out with tax-payers money contradict the last 20 years of Right-Wing deregulation, unfetterred-market-knows-best rhetoric. Yup.

After 8 years of mostly Republican control of the Executive and Legislative branches (hell, Judicial too for at least the past three), then the Democratic Party line is by default the very definition of "change."

Republicans eat babies, Democrats are angels
Republicans love you, Democrats will screw you
If Obama wins there will be change - if McCain wins there will be change.
There will be no "change" with either victory, just bend over and get used to it.
What a kick ass 200th post.

"It seems
that before John McCain became the Scourge of Wall Street (i.e., all
times before September 18, 2008 or so) he was such an enthusiast about
financial market
deregulation that he was bragging about his plan to make the health
care system as awesome as the financial system. Here's what he wrote in
September
2007:
Opening up the health insurance market to more vigorous nationwide competition, as we have done over the last decade in
banking, would provide more choices of innovative products less burdened by the worst excesses of state-based regulation. "
Mr. 'Fundamentally a deregulator,' speaks...

No change perhaps. But also no new Evangelical Supreme Court members.
I can live with that.

I can't predict who will win this fall, I know who I want to win, but I digress. What I am pretty sure of is this. Whoever the poor S.O.B. is, he has a slim chance at a second term.

If current hardships make it hard for a second term, then FDR never had a chance.
And of course, the winner is following the worst president in US History. That's kinda a plus.
Right now, with the harships we're facing, I don't even want the candidates to debate. I'd rather they sat down and discussed some real plans.
