When I went to Hong Kong for the first time last month, every person I talked to were extremely proud that they did not belong to China. They felt their Chinese neighbours were smelly, stupid, and rude. The border between the mainland and Hong Kong is electrified, with razor wire and a no-man's land in between. Guard towers are about every 100m apart. Although China technically owns Hong Kong, they are really two separate countries. Same as with Macao. Totally different. I didn't see the border to Macao but I imagine it is the same. The border is not there to keep the Hong Kongers out of China. With an average income four times that of China, Hong Kong is very attractive to the mainlanders.
Also, in Hong Kong, I did not notice any censorship, while it is rampant in China. The presses seemed to be free. Yet for some strange reason, when I crossed to border to the Mainland, I was more comfortable with the peasants on the street, the spitting, the crooked cab drivers, the constant offering of young girls, etc. Go figure.

Neil, where were you crossing from? I've crossed into Hong Kong twice from extended stays in China and I'm curious if your description is a change or just my faulty memory. The most recent was from Lo Wu (Shenzhen) by bus. The time before was via Guangzhou into Kowloon by train and while I remember the border, you had to take note of it...I don't recall it being as imposing as your description.
I can't speak to Macau's Mainland border, as I simply took the ferry from Hong Kong. Coming from Hong Kong, I think Taiwanese businessmen and little joss shrines were the steepest hurdle for getting out of the terminal. ;)

Michael, I crossed by train to Shenzhen. The border I am talking about is not in Shenzhen though, but is north. I was heading to a tourist attraction about 45 minutes from Shenzhen (a Soviet Aircraft Carrier, complete with dancing girls wearing US Marine dress uniforms. We won the cold war!) and the driver pointed it out to me. It weaved through quite rugged and dense forest. He told me that people still get through it, but I can't imagine how.

Too bad I can't post any pictures but here is a link to a description to the park. The girls dancing while wearing US Marine dress uniforms as well as 19th century British naval uniforms, all the while waving union jacks and US was quite surreal. Can't find a picture online though. The hanger deck disco light show with Russian girls dancing was good as well.

Mike this one is for you.
It was a great event, a town hall, packed house. I volunteered and at the end a worker ask if I would mind going on a McDonald run for lunch, and guess who it was for...............................

Neat, Jodi! Sounds like you had a blast.
I worked the Democratic National Convention in 2000 in Los Angeles and loved every minute of it.

Wow. Now that's a hell of memory. Especially if or when Obama wins the Presidency.
