"That's why I would be much more likely to agree to insurance reform/regulation than I would to socialized medicine."
This may be the most desirable answer, though it's certainly the lessor of evils to have the government intervene. There are several ways to limit the "advantages" that insurance companies currently enjoy. Opening them to greater liability for the decisions they make would be helpful. Establishing limits on premiums sold to individuals who seek insurance outside the work setting- at least to make such policies more equitable- would give relief (and greater insurance portability) to many people. Limiting the ability of insurance companies to make medical decisions in place of state licensed and board certified physicians would be most helpful
Other issues- the legal cost of practicing medicine- would be improved through tort reform and limiting attorney "reward" for malpractice cases. The concept of an accuser paying legal fees in certain cases would be preferable to the current "malpractice lottery".

Okay, now this is pretty damn funny. Photos of McCain juxtaposed with captions taken directly from Dark Knight Returns, to create a sort of narrative. A couple of panels appear below, but it's worth clicking on the link to see the whole thing.

How about the government just own the insurance company?
Al I'll go one better, why don't they get rid of the insurance companies, cut out the expensive middle man.

I worked in a hospital pharmacy for about 5 years and it was my job to give refunds on items not used, because every patient is given certain things like kleenex, tylenol and the charges were pretty close to that 20 dollar kleenex price. They told me to not give refunds if just one item was missing so people were charged about 350 dollars for items they never used except for one tylenol.
It made me sick. After about a year I became a pharmacy tech and was able to work on IV's so I didn't have to rob people all day.

Man, and you still think you have the best medical coverage in US ? When I had my eye surgery in 2001, I only paid 35 FRENCH FRANCS ( not even Euros ) for the whole thing, and this is because I wanted to have the TV for an extra night in the hospital ! Everything else was covered by the social security.

Last time I was in the hospital (in Feb.), I made sure that everything in the room that wasn't tied down went home with me. If they are going to charge my insurance company for the item, then I was going to have that item.

Because that would cause a collapse in our economy that would dwarf what's happening now. How many 401ks, pension funds, etc. have significant holdings in the insurance companies? Their value would drop to zero instantly.
Why not just have the government nationalize all business and get rid of the stock market all together? :P

Since you're Canadian you might not be able to relate to this, but if you've EVER had to spend any time at a government office in the U.S., you would know that customer service is NOT something you want to have to depend on the government for. Regardless of whether it's the local license branch for the Department of Motor Vehicles or the Immigration and Naturalization Service office (now a part of Homeland Security, which doesn't help), or the U.S. Customs Office, you'll always find that the lines are long, the employees are overworked/underpayed/underappreciated, the service is lousy, and if you have anything even remotely complex to deal with you might as well take at least a half day off work, because you're going to be waiting.
If you've ever experienced any of these type of government "services," you'd know why right-headed voters are dead set against putting the government in charge of health care on a large scale.
Looking at it another way, do you really think we really want the same government that can't properly address the health care needs of U.S. military veterans handling the day-to-day health care needs for the entire nation?

No thanks.
