Palin totally flunks out on Gibson's question about the Bush Doctrine. I guess she missed this on the exam cram. Starts on 7:09 in this video

Maybe she thought it was about, you know...personal grooming.

Jason:  What do you think his campaign should have done differently, or what do you think they did do that was so wrongheaded it has swayed roughly 5% of voters (based on polls) to switch to McCain?

1)  Don't attack Palin's inexperience, since it's roughly equal to Obama's.  Only use it as a defense against any attack against Obama's inexperience.

2)  Don't attack her children, and don't attack her over her children.  The big undecided middle will rapidly edge away from you while you do that.

3)  Don't immediately spread dozens of rumors about her that nearly all turn out to be immediately debunked.  It reduces the impact of whatever true grievances turn up.

Although to be fair, that wasn't really done by the 'Obama campaign'.  It's not like all democrats have a planning meeting every morning where the day's strategy is plotted out.  Bloggers say what bloggers say, and I'm sure both McCain and Obama occasionally wish their supporters would shut up.

They should have welcomed Palin to the campaign, pointed out her undesirable stands on all sorts of issues, expressed a little bit of surprise and relief about McCain's choice, and avoid comparing her to Obama in any way (she should only be compared to Biden, stressing Biden's knowledge).  Leftist feminists shouldn't attack her, they should compliment her on how well Palin is capitalizing on the path the Democratic Party has blazed for her.  Criticise her gently, somewhat condescendingly, like she's in over her head.  Don't attack her viciously, making her seem like she's the scrappy little underdog.

I think the biggest thing is to avoid the Obama - Palin comparisons at all costs.  Obama will never win that, because he's #1 and she's #2.

Joe thanks for the time code and link.

She has abused her power, to be vindictive, sounds like another VP we know .... Cough cough~ Cheney~ Cough cough.

She sounds like she is itchin' for a fight

She wants to take an already flawed educational system and have our children learn creationism.

She makes fun of public service.

Her faith tells her, her God can cure being gay.

McCain  supported Bush 95% of the time.

If you vote for McCain/Palin you will be getting more of the same.  And all that talk of "Bush was a crazy republican" was nothing but lip service.

Saying it might be necessary to use force to defend a NATO member is "itchin' for a fight"?

That's pretty much what the Obama campaign itself did do, aside from the "avoid comparing to Obama."  But that one is difficult, because the immediate talking point coming from the Republican side was "Palin is more experienced and more qualified than Obama because of her executive experience."  The Obama campaign can't really totally ignore that stuff, because the fact is that if you repeat something often enough people will start believing it.  So to some degree they had to respond.

As to the rest, as you yourself said in this internet age there's no way to control what unofficial supporters and bloggers do or say.  I'd question whether it has that much effect.  People gravitate towards internet shit that affirms what they already believe, and get pissed off by the stuff that contradicts what they already believe.  I don't think it changes minds.  I don't think there's undecideds that were swayed by the perception that Palin's family was being attacked, for example.

I think Palin is popular because she has charisma and is an effective speech reader.  She's a skilled politician who has been able to mold a very effective public image in a short time.  To make inroads, the Democrats are going to have to change her image.  The mistake they are making so far is in random scattershot attacks that are all over the map, many of them on arcane policy things that will not resonate with people.  They need to focus... pick two very simple negative ideas about her and start repeating them over and over and over.  For example, "Palin's a liar.  She lied about the Bridge to Nowhere.  How can we trust her to tell the truth about anything else."  Or "Palin says she's for change, but she agrees with President Bush 100% of the time.  She's Bush with lipstick."

I don't know if anyone has mentioned it, but what if Obama DID ask Hillary to join the ticket and she said no? Of all the Dems this year I liked Hillary the most (or disliked her least, maybe). Maybe being second fiddle isn't her style and she'd prefer to win on her own merits when next she runs for President.

I watched the Charlie Gibson interview last night. Here's my serious question, although admittedly it's asked snidely: How does Alaska being next to Russia make Palin a foreign policy expert in any way? I had heard some folks at the RNC say this, and that tall boob Doocy (?) on Foxnews as well, but Gibson said that McCain himself had used that? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? By that logic the governors of...I dunno twelve states are foreign policy experts. Heck the Governor of Michigan must be a foreign policy genius.

Does Alaska by itself have diplomatic relations with Russia? Is there a Russian - Alaskan treaty? Or ambassadors? I understand Palin is a formidable politician but this, to use a phrase from my good friends at Fox News, is Kool-Aid drinking taken to a whole new level.

*****

He couldn't ask her. They spent months slamming each other. McCain would be shooting fish in a barrel going up against that.

Just a point on her "visiting Ireland". Her plane stopped to refuel. Doesn't count.
