I felt that when Obama made the comment, his audience definitely made the
connection in their minds right away, judging from the response.

>>Do you even know what Affirmative Action means and what it is intended to redress? Legally speaking, I mean.<<
Yes, as one that is defined as a minority, I am very familiar with it.

>>Because he's an asshole. Hardy har har.... <<
Can always rely on William for his witty repertoire - Ya got great reply to post skeeells man!

>>I'm curious why you needed to add this qualifier. I don't recall anyone espousing a majority of those things on the list.<<
I thought it would be humorous because of the previous threads, some here got it. I don't agree with the whole sentiment but it is humorous and at least entertaining.

>>That's quite an army of straw men <<
Refute what you want by providing your opposition... You have to do more work than saying - straw man.

And just an FYI, the term "Bitch" to intelligent, strong minded woman, is not a bad thing, we look at it as a compliment. :0)

I totally dig the self-empowerment and the idea of "taking the word back" but as a man blessed to be married to an intelligent, strong minded, proud and beautiful woman, a man who is trying to raise his daughters to be such women, I find the term offensive.  Its why some pages back I asked for the term not to be applied to Senator Clinton and why I would ask that people refrain from using it pertaining to Governor Palin.

Please elaborate then.

Nothing takes the wind out of the sails,  when someone goes "God you are a bitch!" and you respond with "Why Thank You."  And mean it.

Now if someone uses it, as in the meaning of a female dog, I cry. LOL :0)

I guess I am to assume you know what it means.

If we agree on the definition:
“Affirmative action” means positive steps taken to increase the representation of women and minorities in areas of employment, education, and business from which they have been historically excluded.

So what is it you really want to know?

By putting forth the definition posted above (and I assume that means you agree with it) how do you square that definition with this statement from your previous post:  "You're constantly seeing subtle, coded racism in campaign ads, but see nothing racist about blacks being promoted over more qualified white applicants because of Affirmative Action." (Emphasis is mine).

It is not Affirmative Action to hire or promote a minority over a more qualified white applicant.  Its likely bad business, but its not Affirmative Action as it has been legally defined.  Recognizing that how do you reconcile the two statements?  Where does Affirmative Action policy require, mandate or imply that a less qualified person can be hired or promoted over a more qualified person?

Great points Geoff.

(You might want to find out some care and feeding tips, too.)

I don't need to, that was not my statement, that was John Hawking's list *as stated in that post.*

I also replied a few posts ago...

Sorry to disappoint you.

Right. So you had no motivation other than to share John Hawking's point of
view with us.

Oh, other than adding * vile JBF* to the "you just might be a liberal."

I wonder when we started to get too polite to call people out for trolling
around here?

Sorry to disappoint you.

I'm not disappointed.  But I also don't believe you.  You chose to post the John Hawking list.  Its is reasonable to infer from your posting it that you believe the sentiments contained therein as you posted it without comment.  And you have done nothing to refute that inference in any substantive way.  But I am game. Why don't you articulate which points on that list that you do not agree with? As you said: Refute what you want by providing your opposition...
