Obviously, Senator Obama wasn't making reference to Gov. Palin as a pig.  What he certainly may have been attempting to do, however, was try to rally a group of supporters and, via the national lens, counter a Republican uptick in enthusiasm by attacking Sen McCain's refreshened bid for the "change" mantle via a reference to Gov. Palin's remark.  However many times Sen. Obama may have turned the phrase in the past, this was a revamped stump speech presumably aimed at combating the McCain campaigns effort to steal back that "change" mantle (a'la the 2000 primary campaign).  Instead, the campaign finds itself outmaneuvered and forced to deal with a sideline issue rather than press forward with their efforts to seize back the momentum.

'To echo Jeff,  it just seems a little sloppy, strategy wise, to even allow for the possibility of using a catch phrase so pointed in a speech (by intent or otherwise) when it may be turned against you.

I thought Sean Hannity was going to have a brain hemorrhage last night when Mike Huckabee said he thought we should give Obama the benefit of the doubt about the pig line - that it is an old phrase used by lots of people.

I think it was a mistake for the McCain campaign itself to jump on this. Maybe if it was the party jumping on it, or some "non-affiliated" group, but the campaign itself should have taken the exact same response that Huckabee did.

Having said all of that, I felt that when Obama made the comment, his audience definitely made the connection in their minds right away, judging from the response. It was laughter mixed with applause.

Geoff, a five hour lecture on tax law would have been my last one ever. It was bad enough attending those when I was a student!

Imagine the suicide rates in such a class!  Gawd Awlmighty, I hated tax.  Second only to property as classes that I am certain I will be taking again in hell.

If only his hemorrhage could have taken O'Reilly, Olberman and Mathews with him!  (I kid! I kid!).  The cynic in me really suspects that come November, in the privacy of the voting both, good ol' Sean will pull the lever for Obama-Biden.  Guaranteed ratings for four years.

After years of aiming cheap jabs at prominent women in the Democratic party like Hillary Clinton and Nancy Pelosi, when did the GOP become oversensitive to perceived sexist comments?

From ChicagoTribune.com, October 2007:

McCain criticized Democratic contenders for offering what he called costly
universal health care proposals that require too much government
regulation. While he said he had not studied Democratic candidate Hillary
Clinton's health-care plan, he said it was "eerily reminiscent" of the failed
plan she offered as first lady in the early 1990s.

"I think they put some lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig," he said of her
proposal.

Would not the response to that question -- as framed -- be when did the Democrats find that it was okay to make sexist comments?  I think both parties are always happy to make whatever hay in whatever way they can.  I do think there has been some sexism involved regaridng Palin and Clinton.  As to Palin -- would there be the same number of pundits who really questioned a man running for VP who had five kids, one of whom is pregnant and another is a special needs child?  As for Clinton how frequently was the term bitch thrown around or strongly implied?  What this election year has taught us is that we tolerate sexism much more than we do racism.

Wow - a lot of pages overnight -

To answer Neil's question - Obama got a bill passed that would help educate little kids about how to avoid preditors.

McCain's add said that Obama wasted tax money giving small kids Sex Ed - it was said leeringly, too.

John Byrne?  Bravo!  BRAVO!

Reading your post quickly, I thought you wrote "creditors" -- which made me laugh.  I didn't realize creditors were hounding kids.  Will the credit card companies stop at nothing?  But imagine the class:

Teacher: "Now Johnny repeat after me: Notice? What notice? What do you mean you didn't get my check? Its in the mail.  What's his name?  Lady you got the wrong number."

Edited to add -- when I re-read it I understood your point but I wanted to share my funny little guffaw!

The Obama Campaign has responded to charges that he called Ms. Palin a pig.

From John Hawkins, you just might be a *vile JBF* liberal if...

* You're sure the Constitution explicitly guarantees the right to abortion and gay marriage, but not the right to own a handgun.

* You think Dan Quayle is the dumbest Vice-President we ever had because he believed a flash card that misspelled "potato," but think Obama is a genius despite the fact he believes we have more than 57 states.

* You'd be more upset about your favorite candidate being endorsed by the NRA than the Communist Party.

* You think the same criminals who use guns in the commission of a crime will just hand them over to comply with the law if guns are made illegal.

* You know that 86% of all income taxes are paid by the top 25% of income earners and you still feel that the rich "aren't paying their fair share of the taxes."

* You're worried that Osama Bin Laden might not get a fair trial if we capture him, but want George Bush thrown in prison for being too zealous in protecting us from Al-Qaeda.

* You get infuriated when you hear about the CEO of a Fortune 500 company making tens of millions of dollars, but don't see a problem with an actor, basketball player, or trial lawyer making the same amount.

* You're constantly seeing subtle, coded racism in campaign ads, but see nothing racist about blacks being promoted over more qualified white applicants because of Affirmative Action.

* You think George Bush is a chickenhawk because he wanted to fight in Iraq and Afghanistan despite the fact that he only served in the National Guard, but you don't think the same about Barack Obama, who has never served in the military and probably couldn't find either country on a map without help.

* You think the case for global warming is proven without a shadow of a doubt, but that we need another century or two worth of evidence to figure out if capitalism and free markets work better than socialism.

* You believe the best way to fix the government screwing something up in the market is with...drumroll, please...more government intervention.

* You think the first thing we should have done when Russia invaded Georgia was to take the matter to the United Nations, where Russia sits on the UN Security Council, with Veto power.

* You spend your days criticizing the use of private jets, SUVS, and luxurious houses that consume enormous amounts of resources and then ride in an SUV to the airport, get on your private plane, and fly home to your luxurious house.

* You have more nice things to say about countries like Cuba and France than you do about your own country.

* You think the war in Iraq is unwinnable, but victory in the war on poverty is going to happen any day now if we can just get the Democrats back in charge.

* You won't even support English as our national language, but can't seem to understand why people worry about tens of millions of illegal aliens changing our culture.

* You think censorship is absolutely wrong; except when it's applied to conservatives on college campuses or on talk radio via the fairness doctrine.

* You get more upset about an American soldier accidentally killing a civilian than you do about a terrorist deliberately blowing up a school bus full of kids.

* You think Fox News is hopelessly biased to the right, but MSNBC, CNN, NBC, ABC, and CBS call it right down the middle.

Hardy har har...
