"Religious assholes who think everybody who doesn't think exactly like them are somehow a notch below them on the evolutionary ladder."

Now, that's not fair, William, you know they can't believe someone is less evolved than them if they don't believe in evolution.

(The issue of being less "spiritual" and therefore less moral or less "human" might work, as that involves spiritual justification and the aristocratic principle rather than the more materialist evolutionary theory. )

No answers from the two resident financial wizards Mr. Casselman or Mr. Myers.

I see Lehman is going down a bit boys.  Perhaps a taxpayer bailout (without limit) can be arranged for them too.  Or maybe KDB will still come to the rescue?

Gee, now where was Lehman back in say January of 2008?

I guess Lehman's "economists" just didn't understand the housing markets either.  Huh?  Perhaps reading a few BLS reports will clear their heads?

Is this what they call free fall?  Someone help me out here.

Lehman will be cutting some heads soon I would imagine.

Then comes the news of pending home sales and the genius quoted immediately below weighs in.  He is clearly fit for his job in finance.

"Overly stringent lending criteria imposed by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac in the past month no doubt held back contract signings," said NAR chief economist Lawrence Yun.

Is the guy a comedian?

At least Fannie is at .81 cents or so (only down something like 80%).  That's a relief.

Oh yeah, I read Bear Stearns was involved in some insider trading?  Is it true that the fund managers were telling the investors to stay put while liquidating their own assets?  Who was the compliance guy (or is that the wrong question)?

Is this common practice on Wall Street?  I could make a list up of instances of it and it does seem rather common.  I don't know because I don't have the inside track like you guys.

Anyway, you two fellows put your heads together and get back to me.  The SEC has already weighed in but perhaps you know something they don't (seeing as you're insiders).

Oh yeah, would SEC and Fed regulators ever look the other way?  Like the FCC and FAA regulators do (or did)?

Sorry for all the questions but two insiders like yourselves are really an asset to this thread and I hope you can answer at least one question.

Thanks!

Differences between Obama and McCain on the economy

This one paragraph pretty much summed up the entire article.

Economists say there are things to like in both programs. They generally favor reductions in top rates as a way to spur new investment and job creation, so on that point McCain's program gets good marks. However, there are worries that the higher deficits that are expected because of the tax cuts could drive up interest rates, raising the cost of money for businesses and result in less investment, not more.

Damned if they do and damned if they don't.

You're right I should have specified "far left" and not "just left." Working class = rural America that, in Barack Obama’s telling, ‘bitterly’ clings to its guns and religion.

State your disagreements or your argument - that language is unnecessary and just lowers the quality of the JBF board.

If you can't write a post without it, then consider not writing a response.

So how does this differ from non-religious types who think everybody who doesn't think exactly like them are somehow a notch below them on the evolutionary ladder?

I remember some born-again type telling my wife she was going to hell because she smoked cigarettes.

Palin's comments about how God, the pipeline, the war etc. are all pretty "out there" if you ask me.

Watching someone go through late-stage emphysema is hell, so I guess because my mom was a smoker I've been through hell.

Here's a helpful hint, though:  Whenever you hear someone refer to themselves as "born again," you need to realize that you're encountering someone who has found the truth.

Repeat after me:  "Trust those who seek the truth, doubt those who find it."

Rinse.  Repeat.

;-)

John, if I may answer your question directed at William - in that hypothetical - no difference.  But in terms of the discussion we're having, that hypothetical person doesn't exist.

So how does this differ from non-religious types who think everybody who doesn't think exactly like them are somehow a notch below them on the evolutionary ladder?

There are no non-religious types running for national office - they're all Christians.

If you mean people on this board - sure, sure, we've all seen the religious threads.  But on this thread, I think most have been careful to make the distinction between having feelings of mistrust about certain forms of Christianity, as opposed to the whole belief system.

Look - I'm not a Christian - I have no beliefs.  But I certainly enjoy a lot of what is attributed to "Jesus Christ" - it's good philosophy and a decent way to get through life - and if someone lives by those standards, power to them.   It's when his words and philosophies start to get twisted and misused that my spidey-sense starts shrieking.
