Emery:  Honestly I had no idea that Republicans watch Oprah. I thought we all watched O'Reilly 24/7 with fifteen minutes a day off for a puke break.

It's one more failing of trying to split everything into only two political groups.  There's a massive number of women, many of them Oprah fans, who are highly conservative in a number of issues (family, social), and highly liberal in others (economy, etc).  I think they probably make up a large chunk of the swing voters.

Oprah backs Obama, and is putting her (considerable, no pun) weight behind him; it'll help Obama a lot, but it may cost her a little credibility in the future.  Not because she picked a bad candidate, but because in the future she won't be able to claim non-partisanship.  That's her call to make.

I haven't heard of a boycott accomplishing anything for many, many years.

I'm already boycotting her by instinct in exactly the same way I boycotted barbie dolls when I was ten.-Emery

Yeah, I'll be stealing this...

Michael:  Um... Al noted that the content wasn't verified by Snopes a few pages back. What Al was rebutting was Scott's claim that Snopes doesn't bother to verify the content if not asked to.

Sorry, I missed that.  Apologies, Al.

Looking at the Bishop figure in the DC Figurine thread, it struck me that what we REALLY need for this thread is a bunch of Marvel Civil War-type "I'm with . . ." banners.

Just to get the ball rolling, here's mine:

>>What passes for "liberalism" and "conservatism" these days, scares the shit out of me. <<

I agree with you, I don't think either one represents that ideology any longer.

Palin and her pastor share the stage while he predicts Alaska will be a refuge for people during the Rapture, and that the church has to be "ready" for them (video, at the 1:40 mark)

Interesting link, Joe -- thanks.

I'm not a believer in the Rapture, but I know lots of people who are (I'm related to a few, in fact).  The thing to keep in mind with this kind of thing is that Christians in general have believed that we're in "the end times" since pretty much since Jesus was crucified, so the talk about "the end times" from the pulpit in this type of evangelical setting should always be taken with a grain of salt.

I'm not comfortable with this type of talk or belief mainly because it doesn't line-up with my own personal beliefs, but I am very hesitant to do anything other than simply respect the views even though I disagree.  My gut reaction to this type of talk is usually "nutjob," but the rational part of me understands that it only seems nutjob to me because it doesn't line-up with my own belief structure.  If "nutjob" applies in that case, then I also have to label Catholics, Muslims, Buddhists, agnostics, and atheist as "nutjobs" as well, because those faiths are all based on belief systems that stray as far from my own personal beliefs (or perhaps even farther) than these type of evangelical-based belief system.

The video you posted makes me a bit uncomfortable, but I personally don't think this in any way disqualifies Palin from being able to serve as a potential leader if necessary.  The concept of "the end times" is essentially a state of waiting for a savior to appear, not hastening his arrival by laying waste to the world.

It's not unreasonable to assume that a Christian -- even an extreme evangelical Christian -- might actually lead in a more righteous and moral manner than someone who has no basis in faith (which is not to imply that any of the Presidential or Vice-Presidential candidates lack faith -- I know nothing of Biden, but Obama, McCain, and Palin all seem to have solid faith-based foundations in their lives).

All that said, though, the video is indeed interesting in a variety of ways -- thanks again for posting it.

No problem, Keith. Things can get disjointed fast in a thread that moves
like this one. And thanks to Michael Roberts for getting my back while I
was gone. (Also thanks to Michael for helping me realize a couple pages
back that a certain phrase requires the possessive form of the word..)
