As a Democrat, I was HOPING he would pick Romney!
I'm a Democrat (just not a party-line Democrat), Romney was the only one he could have picked that would have possibly made me possibly vote for Obama. Had it been Romney I think I would have thrown up a little in the back of my throat.

McCain beat Romney so resoundingly in the primaries, and I think those primary voters were sending a message that they didn't want another party-line conservative, so to pick him would have been a major backwards step.

You think so? Polls have indicated a notable amount of Clinton supporters (like 20% or something) claim to be seriously contemplating McCain, in spite of the fact it defies all logic. Those people clearly weren't for Hillary because of her policy stances, (given the vast differences between her and McCain), so their support for her must have been based on gender or personality. The Palin pick now gives these folks an even bigger rationale for voting McCain. Perfect strategy by McCain, given Obama's big mistake of not tapping Hillary as his choice. I think the election is over... all hail President McCain, our Republican overlord. I can't believe the Democrats have blown another Presidential election.

I am just so glad he didn't pick Liberman. From what I am finding out on her, she is pretty conservative, Anti-abortion rights, Alaska was the first state to ban gay marriage and she supported that, her husband works for an oil company in Alaska, which means alternative energy will not be high on their to-do list.
So far what I have learned I don't like her much, but will keep an open mind until I learn more and make sure my facts are completely straight. At first I thought she was a moderate republican which made me worry. Now I am thinking she was just a token woman which kind of pisses me off.

I was wondering a few weeks ago if anyone has used the phrase "Obama Nation" for good or bad?
Are there any slogans such as "I'm voting for an Obama Nation"?
Haven't been by a book store lately have you?

I thought it was a clever choice for about ten minutes. Now I think it makes McCain look desperate and a little insulting to women - not least Palin herself.
Also her name sounds like Stalin, and we know how big a factor 'names sounding a bit like other names' is going to be in this election.

Alaska was the first state to ban gay marriage and she supported that
That's a misleading statement. That happened in 1999, well before she took office in 2006.
One of the first things I looked at today was anything having to do with gay rights for her. While she does oppose same-sex marriage (like Obama) she is does care about GLBT concerns about discrimination. The previous Governer did not implement same-sex benefits but she signed them into law.
She's most definitely not anti-gay.

Marc: As a Democrat, I was HOPING he would pick Romney!
I agree; well, maybe not agree, since I'm not a Democrat and don't want McCain to sabotage himself... but Romney would have been a terrible choice. I was really surprised how many people were batting his name around.
Lieberman would have been interesting, an example of McCain reaching to the center, but I think that would have been a failing strategy. It would have ticked off the base, and I don't think it would have brought many over from the Dems.
The more I think about it, the better choice Palin seems to me. She's conservative enough to make the republican base happy, but at the same time will be difficult for the Democrats to attack. Maybe experience and age, but that kind of opens Obama up for counterattacks.
Attractive, too. She's once once in the Miss Alaska beauty pageant, if I remember right. I wonder how much that will effect things? Obama's attractiveness certainly has helped him.

Maybe name-confusion is what it's ALL about. McCain picks Palin, a woman, but hopes enough voters will thinks it's Pawlenty...
