I lean towards having the death penalty, but what I DO find offensive is that it usually takes the system ten to forty years to execute someone (unless of course you're a high profile convict like Timothy McVeigh). I would suggest that convicts on Death Row get one year to appeal, otherwise no more red-tape, that's it.
On a personal level, it would seem like eye-for-an-eye in the case of 1st-3rd degree murder would not be as bad a thing. These are convicted murderers who would normally spend the rest of their lives in prison, and most likely to kill again if they get out - why should I pay for that? Execution for these high-level crimes may go a long way in diffusing the 'gansta' appeal of wanton GTA-like violence that gun-toting teens and young adults seek, especially when they realize there is an actual severe penalty for murderous actions.
The Supreme Court, however was correct in stating that death was unequal punishment for the sickening, appalling crime of rape.
While the candidates have hinted towards some sort of stance either way on these issues... it would go a very long way for me if each candidate stated that they would unequivicobly support Supreme Court decisions... no wiggling around with vague notions of what they interpret the courts to mean.

Maybe the death penalty is a bit harsh for rape. I guess an eye-for-an-eye would be fine. They could spend 1 hour of each day of the sentence naked in the general population shower with their wrists handcuffed to their ankles with a blindfold on. That would give the other prisoners an outlet for some recreational time.

McVeigh's execution was "quick" because he dropped his appeals. Time to appeal can be limited but not where new or compelling evidence comes to light so I couldn't support a blanket one year statute of limitations.

Finally! All the hunters in DC can breathe a sigh of relief! Why, I'm going out right now and purchase a semi-automatic to kill all the wayward deer here in the District. Hooray! It's going to be so much safer to walk down Georgia Avenue now!
edited to add: And those blasted Redcoats better watch out, too!

Here's some more interesting news off the wire: McCain admits to being computer illiterate. I think this is also good news -- the man was around when they invented the abacus and that still works perfectly well.

The presumptive Republican nominee needs to move at his own pace; if he moves too fast into the new millennium, McCain will start thinking that the Internet is a series of tubes...

They segregate child molesters from the general populaton Jodi? Dammit. I'd always took solace in the belief that they WERE in the general population and would most likely get what they had comig to them. The hell.

Ever the optimist I see this as an improvement over a president who is functionally illiterate! Yay, progress!

Um... Scott, I believe that was a porn-movie plot.

From the related Supreme Court thread (damn this board can be a civics class sometimes) someone asked how old Stevens is. The next president may well be able to reconstitute the Court. Stevens is in his late 80's. By the next term Ginsburg, Kennedy, Breyer and Scalia will all be in their 70's. It speaks to how young the Regan/Bush 1 appointees were and how old the Clinton appoints were.
