Here's a slightly off-topic rhetorical question that I would love to know more about.

Why ARE we still in Germany and Japan and other places I'm too dumb to think of?

I think we as Americans should be gone, I think the UN peacekeepers should be present.

And let me posit it this way -- if the Iraqi government asks us to maintain a presence should we?

Good question Geoff.  It would depend for me on what their expectations were.  Would they want the type of presence that a forward base provides?  Or Would they want us to continue patrolling the entire country and putting out fires? I'd favor the former and reject the latter.

We are in Germany because it was thought to be a good deterrent and staging point against the non NATO forces of Europe.  Japan is the same for Asia. We are also tasked with the bulk of defending those countries.

Now that I'm on summer vacation, I'm only checking this Forum once or twice a day.  Damn, am I missing a lot!

Jodi -- I loved you against Big Bill!  What a pompous windbag -- him, not you!

Tell me about it Tom.  If you step away for a moment it takes a lot of reading to get caught back up. And it was good to see Jodi stand in there under fire.

I agree -- and I think its something you can negotiate when asked.

O'Reilly's such a jerk that even on points where I agree w/ him intellectually, I find he's so obnoxious that I take the side of his opponent!

I've been critical of some of your points on this thread lately Jodi, so let me also say you did a good job standing up for yourself against big bad Bill!

By the way, in a lose-lose situation for poor Geoff - Olbermann just beat O'Reilly in the ratings for the first time.

/licks finger, sticks it in air - waits...

If I were Michelle Obama I'd be walking around the White House with a tape measure.

I used to see O'Reilly every now and again because my old office was near
where Fox news headquarters is in Manhattan. Make up is most definitely
his friend.

Well...not REALLY. Just in one demographic. And even that gets an asterisk as O'Reilly was absent on the Friday episode (guest host Laura Ingraham). His total audience was still nearly double Olbermann's.

What did Olbermann win -- the night, the week, the month? How will
O'Reilly refer to his show if its not the highest rated show on cable?

Thanks for the link Joel. I can't believe that 3.8 million people watch
O'Reilly and Olbermann!
