Well, he's plunging straight toward the ground and then makes a 90 degree turn just a few feet from going splat.

Maybe I am missing a page, but I don't see a 90 degree turn you mentioned.  The largest panel shows him coming in at an angle and swooping upwards before hitting the ground.

Of course if someone makes up their mind not to like something before they read the story, it probably doesn't matter much anyway.

The only thing that says to me, Andrew, is that we have different lists, not that your list is definitive, absolute, or the last word.

As to the Spider-totem, god, fate crap JMS has shoveled on the character?  You're far more optimistic than I that it will revert to status quo when JMS eventually leaves the title.

After everything I've read in this Forum, I'm too scared to even crack the cover on a Spider Man comic these days (a sad thing, but true). Seems as if Spidey has become another 'cosmic' character, instead of the more 'street level' hero of old.

Joe - You're right about that. I'm very wary of Spider man now, rightly or wrongly.

I'm with you on that Matt.  I 'm a Chapter 1 type of guy myself. Retooling, revamping and not rehashing.  A bright update but true to the spirit of the original Spider-Man.

The only thing that says to me, Andrew, is that we have
different lists, not that your list is definitive, absolute, or the last
word.

The marriage era has had its share of not-so-great stuff, true,
but I'd attribute that more to particular creative teams and
editorial decisions than the marriage itself. Single Spider-Man
by Lee, Ditko & Romita was really great stuff, but there were
some pretty long stretches of really bland stories from the time
Jim Mooney started drawing Spider-Man until Roger Stern
started scripting him. Single, dating three girls at once, married
with six kids--a sub-par creative team is going to sub-par work
with those scenarios, and a great creative team will still pull off
great stories under those circumstances.

Maybe I'm wrong on this, but deep down, I think if the creative
teams are good and the stories are good, readers could care
less whether or not Spider-Man's married or not. Stern and
Romita Jr. would probably produce great stories with Peter and
Mary Jane happily married; give Kevin Smith and Mike
Deodato a free, single Spider-Man to play around with, and
you'll end up with a bunch of stories that make you wonder why
you wanted to get rid of Mary Jane in the first place.

As to the Spider-totem, god, fate crap JMS has shoveled on
the character?  You're far more optimistic than I that it will revert
to status quo when JMS eventually leaves the title

I think of the Spider-Totem as an unwanted, unloved supporting
character. The writer loves the character, tries to fit it into every
issue whether there's a place for it or not, and is going to
remain oblivious to every complaint against it as long as he's
around. When the next creative team comes around, clear
some space in the attic for the Spider-Totem, where it'll be
joined by Randy Robertson, Jill Stacy, Deb Whitman, Kate
Cushing, Phil Urich, Jessica Carradine, Betty Brant, Billy
Walters, Walter Thorson, Marcy Kane, Glory Grant, Amy Powell,
Roger Hochberg...heck, I'm not even ruling out the mechanical
web-shooters coming back within a couple of creative team
shifts, either.

+++++++++

You are partially right. The panel you describe shows exactly what you describe. The thing is, however, that comics isn't just one image, it is a sequene of images. You cannot point out one image and draw a conclusion, you have to consider all the elements/panels. So, The first panel in the page shows him coming down vertically, since the artist included a black building silhouette. This, in my mind at least, confuses the point the artist is trying to make. I could argue that he took artistic liberty in the last panel and drew a curve and not an angle. The confusion gets worse since the curved line in panel 3 is actually behind panels 1 and 2, where Spider-Man's descent is clearly vertical!

(BTW, Why any writer would be intrested to depict Spider-Man stories and have him glide or fly is beyond me. This is a posiible discussion between writer and editor:

"I want to tell a story where Spider-Man flies"

"But he doesn't fly!"

"Not yet. He-he-he")

They wouldn't be  Well, I like Spider-man, but I hate that he is in New Avengers, I know I'll keep buying New Avengers.

---

Sure they would. Tons of people bought X-Men in the late 90s while bitching about the stories. Tons of people bought X-Men during the Austen run while decrying how horrible a writer he was. How many people on this thread complaining about "Sins Past" and "The Other" still ended up buying all those issues? Comic fans can be pathologically loyal to characters and their titles despite what is being done with them.

From "Amazing Spider-Man" 328 (cover date Jan 1990), the Captain Universe powers allowed him to fly and Peter doesn't think much of the experience (in fact he webswings later in the issue):

I don't know... the spats might be a good idea...
especially if Peter grows mutton-chops to match and
takes to wearing a monocle.

Ok. I'll say it again. What proof or evidence do you have that "fans" dislike Spider-man in the New Avengers.

You dislike it.  But where is your proof of everone else?  People questioned it. But since it has happened? You here very little against it.
