I know that's not an artist working on one of the Spider-books, so I'm not even going to comment on the art.  Suffice it to say, I find that to be a horrible costume.  Just terrible.  I wasn't sure if Marvel could get any farther away from their flagship character than they already have, but I was proved wrong.

Rob had mentioned that he thought this would be a temporary change.  If so, then I guess it's OK, although the whole idea behind this "Iron Spider Design" (Joey da Q's description visa vie Tony Stark designing it for Peter) runs so counter to the character I have a hard time imagining what would preclude such a change.  da Q also mentions gadgets, but to my mind Spider-Man has never been about gadgets.  He has/had his webshooters, his Spider-Tracers and occasionally used the Spider-lamp on his belt, but he's not a gadget character in the vein of Batman or Iron Man.  That, plus Tony Stark saying "My design, my colors" doesn't ring true as something he would say at all.

All in all, a pretty ugly outing no matter if it's for an arc or an attempt to make it status quo.  To me, Spider-Man's costume is the best design, bar none, of any in superhero comics.  It's instantly recognizable to both the fan and the man-on-the-street in a way that 99.9% of superhero costumes are not. Why change?

Ah, how well I remember being crucified by the
fanboys for drawing Spider-Man "too skinny".

Nice spats, btw.

And he has the mystical organic stuff ( webshooters, fangs, glow in the dark eyes, etc) under the armor. Which is like even more stupid.

I like the artwork on this piece, and all things
considered, it isn't a terrible design. Plus, it sounds
like it's just in place for the upcoming Civil War
crossover before it gets tossed in the trash heap
with this one:

If sticking him in a bright, shiny costume for a few
months encourages the creative teams to stop
dismembering Spider-Man and tell some fun stories
again, it's got to be better than what they've been
doing with him.

Yeah, this costume screams "fun".  What makes you think Marvel is going to ::gasp!!:: have fun with the character again after a dismal five-year stretch?  JMS isn't leaving, is he?

Reminds me of the Spider-Man Unlimited cartoon costume, which was itself derivative of the Spider-Man 2099 duds.

Still, pretty butt-ugly. I'm banking on a hoax, maybe a dream. I'd even take an imaginary story.

I'm guessing this will be used for about as long as Daredevil's armor before reverting back.

Not that I have inside info. I just tend to find costume changes and the like can be a fun lark, especially for newer readers who never experienced it, and they can be temporary-espeically with a big movie coming in 2007

Maybe I am wrong and it will last years.  I wouldn;t support that.

Incidentally that armor thing above only lasted 1 issue I believe-it was unceremoniously destroyed 2/3 through the issue IIRC

I don't even think it'll have the longevity of Daredevil's
armor, myself. Spider-Man's a movie star and he's
one of the most recognizable fictional characters on
the planet, so no way Marvel's sticking with this for
too long.

Anyway, the farther they get away from the character,
the easier it is for me not to care what they do to him,
and after the Gwen Stacy Goblin-Baby story, joining
the Avengers and getting his eyeball ripped out of his
head, they can dress him like one of the Village
People (or all of them, if they bring in some clones)
and I don't think it'll get me too worked up at this
point.
