Some, perhaps. But I do think readers have been trained to expect every little thing laid out for them.
On the DC boards, one reader of "All Star Superman" #1 complained that it jumped into the story without explaining all the back story, retelling the origin, or telling you who all these people are, etc.
Granted, several people piped in to tell him he'd missed the point, but you know he's not the only one complaining that he got a rip-roaring adventure story rather than a six issue origin....

That was *the* best thing about All-Star Superman: you got like three panels of Jor-El and Lara and the explosion of Krypton, and then it was off to Superman flying into the sun to rescue a spaceship. THAT'S Superman, not six to twleve issues of Clark stumbling around trying to figure out his powers in Smallville.

Really didn't want to turn this into an All-Star Superman/Morrison discussion.
Either you like it or you didn't - one may love it or hate it for a variety of reasons, but to complain that it starts telling a Superman story without re-hashing the origin or retelling classic stories that have already been told (another complaint mentioned) is ludicrous.

It reminds me of the people complaining about JB's "In Medias Res" technique in Doom Patrol.
Some readers were actually upset that the comics started off with a bang!

I didn't care about that-though if this is for the civilian reader, maybe they should have started out with a little more. If that is what their intent was. Really, I thought that page was a bit of a waste myself.

I didn't like it. I found it distracting and confusing. Otherwise I liked the book.

Everybody wants every little thing spelt out for them.
They don't want to have to think for themselves.
Complete lack of imagination.
Therefore, the warning on your morning coffee: Warning: contents are HOT!

Rob, don't feel bad that you couldn't remember the Happy Birthday joke, I couldn't either (maybe that just makes me dumb too?)
But it sure is funny for those of us old enough to have watched that cartoon (a small coincidence - I kinda lifted that riff for a song on our upcoming second album. It's timed a little differently, and in a different key, but that 'doo-do-doo, doo-doo-do-do-doo, doo-do-doo, doo-doo-doo-doo was definitely the inspiration)
What's the difference between a truckload of money and a truckload of babies? You can't unload the money with a pitchfork....
