The Beatles are John, Paul, George, and Ringo...

Don't forget Clarence. He had all the great ideas IMO. He was robbed.

Disagree with you on all:  it depends on who leaves.   CHEERS wouldn't have survived without Ted Danson.  The creators thought that, STATED THAT, and that's why the pulled the plug on the show when he chose to leave. I doubt FRIENDS would have made it at anytime without Jennifer Annistion or Matthew Perry.

*****************

Todd didn't state that it would be Danson leaving. I took his statement as someone leaving and/ or being replaced. And it did happen twice.

As for FRIENDS, you probably could have replaced someone in the first season, but after that, the show was so about all 6 of them, it would have become a totally different show.

True about Danson.  I think that the show was about him, more than anything else.

Which 'Friend' was so indispensable that the show would have failed in their absence?

**************

Early on, none of them. After the characters became more established, any of them.

Clarence kicked ass!!!!  Stupid John and Paul for getting rid of him and stealing all of his great ideas.

No. He played trombone and looked surprisingly like Eddie Murphy.

I think Matthew Perry's very polished sense of humor was very crucial for distinguishing the show at the beginning.  Jennifer Anniston's hotness and her "do" called a lot of attention to it as well.

"I don't agree with that at all.  Actors, writers, directors are all the same.  They are all a "pull".   They get you to notice something that a company hopes you'll like...and that's no different than an artist pulling you into buying a comic.  Some people will only continue to buy the comic if it is good; some will continue to buy it regardless. Same thing with movie stars."

When an artist can do issues of Amazing Spider-Man that sell 100 thousand copies, and that artist can then go and do his own original work and it will STILL sell 100 thousand, then the creator is the draw.  Unless that's what happens, though, it's the characters that are the real selling point.

Well, all the references on line seem to indicate it was sax. But not the same guy as the Boss's guy.

I'd say Phoebe and Monica were dispensable-Monica because her character wasn't so great, Phoebe because, though a lot of people liked her, she didn't seem to intersect with the other characters in the same way.  So her leaving wouldn't have messed up stories and/or dynamics, even if she'd be missed.

You never know though.
