Thanks, Dave, for a throrough answer. You like things that are definitely "there" and not just theoretically there or part of a "hype." It sounds like your enthusiasm is pretty muted -- am I right? I would say that list of "pros" is about par for any comic I'd be interested in reading. For me to really get excited, I'd need a couple additonal big items on there -- e.g.: "I absolutely love a new character we meet and can't wait to see where that goes;" "I never saw that twist coming and can't believe they did it in a way that seems true to the character;" "that fight scene they started with is so spectacular I want more, more more!" But there's none of that here.
The quality of this preview says this will be a decent to middling comic, maybe too spread out -- but maybe in today's marketplace that's really saying something. Maybe that's cause for excitement?

I wouldn't say my enthusiasm is too muted
- I'm just a little wary of Morrison's stylistic quirks. Still a fan,
though - very much so. I like that Morrison makes me think about
familiar characters in new ways, takes familiar themes and resurrects
them with a new idiom.
I also know that his stuff tends to grow on me, even when I have some
reservations. I had big problems with NEW X-MEN early on, for instance,
but not only did I acquire a taste for it, it ended up being my
favorite run on the X-MEN since the '80s and the only run since then to
bring a sense of evolution to the title.
I'm excited for ALL-STAR SUPERMAN and braced for a little
disappointment that may or may not come to pass. Weird kind of
anticipation, but that's Morrison for ya.

I'm an oldtimer, by which I mean that I've been a comics fan for four decades.
The announcement today that Neal Adams would be doing an exclusive alternate cover for All-Star Superman really pissed me off.
On this board (and elsewhere) we have all talked about the many woes facing the comics industry. Frankly, I would have purchased the Adams cover, but I absolutely will not pay an inflated price to get it.
I would much rahter take the $20.00 + dollars and spend it on a classic back issue than reward Neal Adams, DC, or a shop owner for Neal's coming back simply to visit.
I have to think that such tactics are with us to stay. Every time we moan about the gimmick covers, they take a short break and then return in force. And the industry gets a little smaller.
Thanks DC. Thanks Neal.
You guys can take that spiffy, limited edition, alternate cover and sit on it while rotating.

I generally want the interior and cover art to be by the same person. I make
an exception for Alex Ross and other guys who do painted covers, but that's
about it. If Frank Quitely is the interior artist, then I'm buying the Frank
Quitely cover.

Unless my dealer decides to send me the Neal cover for cover price I will be getting the Quitely cover.

Are there still people who have to buy every cover, or
desperately need a specific cover when there's more
than one offered? I'm as guilty as anybody of buying
multiple copies of X-Force #1 to get all the trading
cards that are still sealed up in their shrink-wrapped
polybags, but I thought that we were down to
retailers and a the same customers that really like
the CGC-slabbed 9.8 copies of last month's
Astonishing X-Men.
I'm sure that there'll be some Neal Adams fans
who'd rather have a Neal Adams cover than the
Frank Quitely one, and I'm sure that there are some
of them out there who'll pay whatever their comic
shop asks to get it, but I'd hardly say that's any
reason to get too worked up. If the 1-in-10 Neal
Adams cover was the only place to read the second
half of All-Star Superman #1, I'd be annoyed, but as it
is, no big deal.

I must take a firm stand on principle and refuse to buy a current book at an artificially-inflated price just because some hot-sh*t artist figures he can churn out a quickie cover and make enough money to, say, buy himself a new living-room suite and entertainment center with a big-screen high-definition TV and...
>Ps-ss-st! It's Neal Adams!<
Aw, hell...

Chuck,
Unless it's much better than Neal's recent X-men effort, I wouldn't worry about it. You won't be missing too much.

I'm there if it's a 25 page Neal Adams cover wrapped around the Morrison/Quitely stuff...
Nah.

You know, I used to see New X-Men issues with beautiful covers. IIRC Ethan Van Sciver would draw a beautiful cover. It was one of those drawings that looked so good, it would make you feel better. Then I would open the book and see all this Quitely art. With its Bug-Eyed, thick lipped, bizarre, stylized drawings. I think Quitely and Igor Kordey are very poor artists. I like Europeans that I meet in real life and I agree with a bunch that post on this board. But when I read snotty sounding stuff that Morrison writes it makes him and Quitely come off as Euro-snobs.
Hey, I don't think the Euro-snobs even "get" American superheroes. So when I see them piss over the estblished superhero characters, I just don't buy their work. When they try to piss over their own fans, man, I have to wonder why we don't see more "Bad Morrison" stories. I think that if you consider comic book revenue, licensing, videogames, and million dollar profit movies, superhero comics are a very profitable endeavor. I may have misinterpreted what Morrison wrote but I read it as if Quitely was "slumming" to work on the superhero stories. I see the superhero story as a kind of American mythology, so I hate to read stuff like that.

Don't get me wrong, I agree with what you are saying about European creators & audience
and American Comics, but there are some of us who do "get" them....
On topic, Quitely easily has possibly drawn the ugliest Superman
of all times. And I just thought his X-Men looked ugly. He is a good
artist but his faces don't carry any appeal for me (if my English is
incorrect, somebody please tell me what is the correct phrase).
