I prefer the "universes meeting" type of inter-company crossover, although I really enjoyed the X-Men/Teen Titans one. That Simonson/Austin artwork, wow!
The JLA/Avengers felt completely "real" to me, mostly due to George Perez's long histories with both teams. IIRC, Kurt Busiek even continued a plot thread from it in the JLA's title.

Unfortunately, the crossovers were not long able to continue in a “pure” form. One of the things that made the first few work so well was that they had no need to explain themselves. Superman and Spider-Man existed in the same “universe” and always had. They just happened to be meeting for the first time. But it could not be left alone. We had to have “portals” to allow passage from one reality to the next, and then pseudoscience to explain how/why some things worked differently on one earth than the other. I ignored what I considered fanwank nonsense in my two sojourns with the concept.

For JLA/Avengers, it simply wouldn't make any sense for two global superhero teams designed to fight world-threatening menaces to have never met before. Both teams had been well established for years.
Add to that the notion that even all the *individual members* of the teams had somehow never met each other before, and you'd have had a really painful stretching of internal logic!
That's why I preferred them to have come from different universes - it ends up being a much simpler explanation. And Kurt Busiek did a great job exploring the different attitudes that Marvel and DC have towards their heroes within the story, which was a lot of fun.

Kurt Busiek did a great job exploring the different attitudes that Marvel and DC have towards their heroes within the story, which was a lot of fun.••• For long time readers, maybe. But return to the First Issue for Somebody rule. Here again we see what helped make the original S/ASM so successful. Introductions, but no explanations. No need felt to explain why the principles had never before met, or why in Spider-Man’s history there had not been any mention of the DAILY PLANET.

Sure, but that was only two heroes. The JLA and Avengers added up to dozens of heroes; a far more complicated premise and therefore much tougher to swallow.

Well, they could have done a story set back in time with the two groups in their Lee/Kirby and Fox/Sekowsky eras. But, understandably, that wasn't what either company wanted to do.
