I could see how it could be stifling for a writer - someone writes Spider-Man leaving MJ's apartment* and arriving at Doctor Strange's Sanctum "10 minutes later", only to be corrected by Mark Gurenwald because "the map clearly shows that it would take at least 30 minutes to get there".
*No disresprect meant to MJ, but putting supporting characters' apartments on this map is really a stretch to begin with.

That's a great Ross Andru link. I found even more examples that I posted here about a decade ago, when he and Gerry Conway had Flash Thompson give Peter a "grand tour" of the Rockaways, giving out street names that no more than 1% of the readership would even get. I was shocked by that level of commitment - but I didn't realize that at the time Andru was actually living there!

How could I forget mentioning that I lived across the street from Columbia from 2001-2018. I even got to see Tobey Maguire running on campus while they filmed Spider-Man 2. Though I referred to it to X-Men friends as where Professor X got beaten in 1984.
And now I am in a neighborhood where Sigurd Jarlson lived. See it? The neighborhood so far down that it gets an arrow pointing to it as it's not on the map?

Flatbush Avenue won't even get you to Bay Ridge (it leads to where I used to live, Mill Basin). That arrow should be pointing southwest, not southeast. People tend to get the off-map places wrong (and I've lived in both)!
My birthtown of Canarsie was once used in an issue of New Warriors....covering a race riot :( . I'm a member of several Facebook groups that post old photos of the area, and randomly came across some nice ones posted from the 70s....by Paul Kupperberg! He's also from there.

I’ve mentioned before that Marvel basing most of its characters in New York went a long way to drawing me into their mythology that Stan and Jack and the gang were merely reporting these stories. After all, Metropolis and Gotham didn’t get mentioned on the news, but New York did. And, in fact, I had been there!

“ During a brief moment when I was being considered as the regular penciler on AMAZING SPIDER-MAN (the gig went to the admittedly more talented Keith Pollard) the writer told me New York was a character in the series. “The way Ross draws it,” I said, “but there’s no way I can give you that.” My access to NYC reference in Calgary was virtually nonexistent.”************ JB - I am very late to the party, but I just read The Thing #1 last night. As someone raised in the UK and then Calgary, where did you find the roots to write about Ben Grimm’s boyhood in New York of decades ago?
