Wasn’t that a Gruenwald for the HANDBOOK?••• Sounds like him. He was the one who gave Smart Alec “Alexander” as a real name, even tho Alec is perfectly proper name. And don’t get me started on “Buried Alien”……….

Awesome that it's been 40 years and I'm still learning things I didn't know about this era of comics. I know I'm biased because of my age, but to me the 80's will always be my favorite comics era.

Came upon a poster suggesting a story in which Wolverine realizes he’s trans and attempts to become a woman, but his healing factor keeps changing him back to male.

See, that's a cool story idea but most definitely NOT a Wolverine idea. If that were in an anthology of, say, stories inspired by Ursula K. Le Guin's "Ekumen" universe, it would fit thematically and be true to the spirit of her work.

Best that a story like that is not done regardless, because there will be cries from people saying that there was nothing to "heal".

@Vinny: in comics, for sure. But it's been long established that some fandoms aren't stuck in the endless 'continuity' or community mindset - literary science-fiction being notably free of it.
My quick rule of thumb: if no-one is dressing up as a character from an IP and touring conventions, but the books are still finding an audience, the readership reaction will be 'oh, that's interesting' or 'meh' as one-and-done responses. Even Stephen King, arguably with a fandom as large as X-Men, doesn't have to deal with fan-think on anything like the same level as your average 10-issue writer does on any Marvel/DC title.

Best that a story like that is not done regardless, because there will be cries from people saying that there was nothing to "heal".••• If they were taking a philosophical stance, perhaps, but that’s not how the healing factor works. All of our cells contain a DNA blueprint for the entire body. This is why stem cells are so useful. They haven’t yet taken on their specific “assignments”. Wolverine’s cells would be the same, so the healing factor would work from that original blueprint
