"Conservative leaders express concern over the drop in birthrate, and have begun advocating for the removal of sex ed and prophylactics from middle and high schools around the country."

The WHO used to estimate that the population of Earth would peak at 10 billion around 2100. WHO reviews their prediction every two years, and the peak year keeps getting moved closer to the present because of declining birth rates. The most recent forecast is that humanity will peak at 10.3 billion around 2080. Most of the population growth will happen in Africa and Asia. The birth rate will drop faster and/or sooner if women’s rights progress faster then expected in Africa and Asia, allowing woman to decide how many children to have.

How does that work? They predict peaking at 10 bn in 2100 but because birth rates are declining, we get to 10bn faster?? Am I missing something?

Due to circumstances me and my wife don't have children and we're of an age where we could have had grandchildren, seeing the state of the world and where it's heading, i'm glad.

Decades ago John Brunner wrote a novel dealing with the problem of overpopulation. It was called STAND ON ZANZIBAR (Hugo for best novel, 1969) and took its title from what was taught in schools back then—that the entire human population of the Earth could theoretically stand on the island of Zanzibar. Brunner explored several interwoven plot lines, looking at the different effects of the World’s growing population. He ended by noting that a large portion of the population was knee deep in the waters around Zanzibar.

Never mind even the resources needed to support overpopulation; most economies are built on the idea that the working age group (roughly 22-65) will remain large and hopefully growing to be able to keep the whole welfare and state infrastructure intact. Of course, American conservatives aren't interested in THAT kind of future concern; they're only afraid of losing the majority political power for whitey.
Kurzgesagt did a really fascinating video about the low birth rate situation in Korea. It ain't good: LINK

My outlook is, we have a name for an economic system which relies upon an ever-growing base of consumers whose efforts prop up and enrich those who came before them, which would totally collapse if the base of consumers ever stopped growing or - God forbid! - began to rescind in any noticeable manner.
