A discussion of this long ago character, the “first” swamp monster, with a 50+ year old drawing by yours truly.

Fascinating (to me) to note how many of my tropes were already in place.

There's something about this early vintage of JB's work that I'll always respond to positively. What is it that just gets me? Well, no doubt that in part it must be the "many of [his] tropes... already in place," as JB says!

Think i have said it before, but my first exposure to your
art was X-Men #113. I was ignorant of the X-Men and we only
got "distributed" American comics in The U.K. and the b+w
reprint titles. Seeing that cover and interior art, there
was just something about it i'd never seen before, a sort
of realism that really appealed to me.
