About a year ago I felt a minor craving for licorice, so ordered some Allsorts from Amazon. While there I found some naked licorice and ordered some of that, too.

Wouldn’t you know, the nefrologist told me it was the worst possible brand.

(Not naming names. Don’t feel like being sued.)

That is bizarre and terrifying. Glad it was such a clear fix in the end!

…start the paper work for medically assisted death.

•••

I think I’ve mentioned my friend from art college who went on to become a nurse. She now participates in Canada’s Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) program. She’s assisted in the termination of more than 500 people who had chosen to end their lives with dignity.

I knew there was something sinister about Bertie Bassett...

Good to hear that you're doing okay, JB.

Personally, I love licorice; can't get enough of the stuff. I'm certainly going to remember this fact though, just in case!

Happy that you are doing better.

I don't like actual licorice. I understand the cherry stuff isn't considered real licorice, so I think I'm safe eating that.

Peter, it's strange that as an adult i would't go out of my
way to buy liquorice despite loving liquorice pipes, and
getting the liquorice selection boxes for Christmas as a
kid. But if my mum passes a bag or box on to me i love it.

Also this topic has reminded me of a Bertie Bassett type
robot being a villain in 80's Dr Who!

Scary. Glad I’ve never been into licorice. Still not sure whether sugar or
fake sugar is worse; the best consensus I’ve found seems to be Stevia is the
least bad but I’m sure all medical findings will eventually flip as in SLEEPER
where Woody Allen discovers that sundaes and all the foods deemed most
decadent in the past are found to be the healthiest / most nutritious in the
future.

I knew someone who ate nothing but licorice. It takes all sorts...

Sorry!

Glad to hear you're on the mend.

...500 people who had chosen to end their lives with dignity.

••

In the name of absolute clarity, I suppose I should note that there is very little that qualifies as "dignity" AFTER death. As my friend has told me, family members and others attending the MAID proceedings are often horrified by what happens after life functions have ceased.
