The President has announced the authorization of covert CIA activity in Venezuala.

I was immediately reminded of Claremont’s reference to “open covert warfare” in an issue of X-MEN.

Y’know, if you ANNOUNCE something, it’s not COVERT.

That was the first thing to come to mind when I read your first sentence. It’s
kinda like saying “I’m hiding these gems under the couch cushion.”

A shrewd person could make such an announcement, even though it wasn’t true, forcing all the drug cartel members to start looking at each other, wondering who the mole is?

The UK did something similar during the Falklands conflict, announcing their submarines would be present in the waters around the island in 48 hours, and any ships in the area would be targets for torpedoes.  But the first submarine didn’t arrive until 96 hours later.

If it were true, it would continue a pattern of recklessly putting our people in danger just for the inverted optics of it.
