Holy Koolaid

I’ve been amused and even informed by some of this guy’s videos, but here, as in so many other cases, he makes the same mistake that often trips my fellow atheists: he argues science and rational thinking against the miraculous.

See, all the rules that govern our world were created by one infinitely wise and powerful being, at least if you believe this old book over here. I don’t. But many do (more than don’t) and that book provides believers with the ultimate ace: God did it. And since God can do literally anything, there is no story in his old Book that can be refuted, provided we accept the book’s own rules.

So attempting to refute the tales in the book is a fool’s errand. Accept them, as believers do, or walk away.

It’s really the only way to stay sane.

Ultimately, the story of Noah’s Ark, whether taken literally or not, reveals to us that a “loving God” can act like a mafia boss when angered - indiscriminately killing  the innocent along with the guilty. That’s not a God I’d wish to worship!

I used to work with a believer. He knew I didn't believe, so he liked to engage me in conversations about his religion, of course. One day I asked him how many children God murdered when he flooded the world.

"They were wicked," he said, by way of justification.

"The children?"

It was interesting to see his facial expressions. Apparently he'd never considered the children.

I do think it's fascinating how many cultures share flood myths.

This article sheds some interesting light on the topic - and the general topic of shared myths by cultures separated by oceans and time.

I much prefer the story of the sinking of Numenor. That definitely happened.

I forget from Jesuit school if the rational, enlightened interpretation of Noah's story is supposed to be symbolic, like mentions of Jesus's siblings, or literal, like the six twenty four hour days of creation.

When I was little, my mom used to have a saying for something that happened a long time ago, that it happened "in the year of the flood". I don't think I ever asked her what year that was supposed to be. And I never heard anyone else ever use it!

Maybe the Ark was a vessel that held the DNA of all the
creatures that the alien god's seeded The Earth with? I'll
get my coat!

Someone once pointed out that there existed scripture and art from China from the period the great flood was apparantly supposed to have happened, and they didn't seem to be affected by it at all. Strange ...

But seriously, if you really believe such an obvious fairy tale, no reason or fact will dissuade you.

There are a number of Chinese flood stories that date back around four thousand years ago, which apparently occurred because of a landslide in the Jishi Gorge which dumped half a million cubic meters of water down the Yellow River per second, putting much of China under water. Christians believe Noah's flood occurred around 4,400 years ago.

I think there's a temptation to ignore actual history in order to dispel an obvious myth. There are also a lot of good reasons why different cultures have flood stories - again, I'm going to share the same article I posted earlier, because it's fascinating. From Big Think: Why are flood myths so common in stories from ancient cultures around the world?
