Word at Heroes Con last weekend was that he was in bad shape but I was still hoping for the best.
I started reading comics when Shooter was EIC at Marvel, for that golden age. I loved his work setting up Valiant, I even followed him to Defiant and enjoyed some of those books too.
As a fan, I can say he almost always made comics I wanted to read. I've been reading comics most of my life so people that do that are pretty important to me.

My condolences to his family and friends.
Late 70s/80s/early 90s comics reader here. Very much enjoyed his writing on AVENGERS, as well as the odd issues of comics like DAREDEVIL and WHAT IF. I've only read his early writing on LEGION much later. As a teenager I devoured the original SECRET WARS series.
Under his leadership, I thought the Marvel line produced some of the best books in the late 70s/early-to-mid 80s.
A true giant in the field.

Whoa.
Secret Wars #12 was the first comic I bought off the newsstand.

All things take a turn eventually I suppose, but the glorious late-'70s and early-'80s Marvel Comics under his tenure as EIC were pure gold to readers who grew up in that era. For a lot of us, the names Jim Shooter and Stan Lee were synonymous with Marvel for most of our young lives way back when.
Another '80s comic book giant, gone too soon. Very sad to hear.

Jim Shooter ushered in and oversaw talent that gave Marvel its second best age since Lee, Kirby and Ditko.
His LOSH stories over the years are amazing.
No matter what, the industry has lost a true giant.

I'm very shocked. Personally, I think his helm as EIC led to many of the comic runs that made me a lifelong comics fan. He was very nice to everyone when I talked to him at a convention appearance. I'm not as much a fan of his writing, but I know many others enjoyed his work.

Good lord. I'm sorry to see this. I hate how often this seems to be happening, and I'm sad every time.
Also, I'm not sure if acid reflux contributed to Mr. Shooter's cancer, or if it really was esophageal cancer that got him, but if you have acid reflux, please don't ignore it. I once worked for a man who ignored his reflux and when cancer developed in the damaged cells, he ignored the cancer because he thought it was just his reflux. It was awful watching the end as it closed in on him.

Very sad to hear. I realize he was controversial among creators and fans, but he made an undeniable impact of the industry, and Marvel, in particular. My condolences to his family and friends. May he rest in peace.

I always had mixed feelings about some of his stunts. (Never cared much for Contest of Champions or Secret Wars, and really was annoyed by Secret Wars II). New Universe was a terrible idea as well. Just seemed pointless to me.
But...he presided over a run of Marvel that has most of my favorite comics of all time in it, and I really liked the Valiant run of Magnus: Robot Fighter as well.
