My idea was that some guy was selected to represent Earth in a "legion" or "army" designed to protect the Universe. In a trade off for ten years of his life he was given Superhuman powers. Able to wander the stars and vastly powerful the lure proved to be strong enough. He and his then girlfriend vowed that their love would be strong enough and would meet up ten years later at a certain location.

That is all "back-story". We join the Hero who has seen and done it all as he returns to Earth for the first time in a decade and has to come to terms with exactly what this has cost him. Starting over and being the "new kid on the block".

I personally like the idea that he manages to travel many lightyears and fight in many wars, seeing black holes being formed, stars going super nova and nuberous sentient life forms. But she, who only lives at the other end of town, doesn't turn up.

This would be all a "back-drop" to the "character" who is being introduced to the reader as a new superhero, this ties in nicely with the fact that he -is- a new superhero to the folk of Earth but well seasoned and reknowned in a distant Universe.

The idea is that various races of aliens had one time set up colonies on Mars. Some aliens are banevolent while others not so much. They had an uneasy allience sort of their version of the united nations But they discover that the planet has become to inhospitable. so they need to look else places ripe on the menu is earth. Some of the warlike races want to invader and dominate. The more friendly want to coexist. They get to earth first and propose working in conjunction with earth to offer them advance tech to protect themselves. They also offer a space vesel that earth can co- command and set up crew. in exchange the nice aliens want to set up a base on the moon. they also offer earth the chance to make the moon a strategic miltary site. The U.N. agrees an ex astronaunt turned test pilot is picked to train to go onto the ship. The aliens on the moon are the Red Colony six  .There are other colonies Red 1 ,2 , 3 , etc. this first contact is the catalyst for superheros and monsters etc entering the world. before then the world was a normal world.

Following on from MAC's suggestion I'd add that there should be certain human parties that are more interested in dealing with the "warring" Aliens than the "nice" Aliens. Because it's just like -us- to let greed get the better of us. This can also provide some nice tension as the nice aliens begin to suspect duplicity on the humans part and you begin to move into the realms of the 'few' cocking it up for the 'many'.

Darren, I was thinking along the same lines. I haven't figured it out who would but i suspect it would be a small fraction not happy with their position in the world order so they make a deal with the would be invaders. I haven't decided how it should end up . I was thinking that i wanted to bad guys to win but i'm uncertain i'd like it to be so original.
While seeing so many movies where the evil alien invades and the good people of earth  have to fight back .I thought how do we always know that the aliens would be evil. Given the history of mankind and our history of going out and takeing new land and claiming it as ours wouldn't be us who were the arrogant ones thinking it was our god given right to conquest space. Great MAC. I was pushing -more- towards "hair-flame" in my next piece;-)

So it seems we were on the same wavelength!

I've modified his eyepieces and elements of his costume.

I "see" him as though he's as powerful as one of Galactus' Heralds. In space there was never as many reasons to "pull" his punches. I feel that being back on Earth might actually be quite "clostrophobic" for him...like an Decathelete stuck in an Elevator!
