I started reading comics on the regular in 1985 with Secret Wars #12. I didn't yet know who John Byrne was, or any artist really, but as an emerging fan his covers stuck out to me on the racks.

I couldn't afford Fantastic Four 279, but the cover intrigued me and flipping to the climax at the rack was enough to amaze me.

The cover of Secret Wars II #1 was by JB, but the art inside was... not.

I followed that story line into my first full issue of John Byrne: Fantastic Four Vol 1 278 "Inwards To Infinity!" with Psycho-Man!

JB's Fantastic Four was the only Secret Wars crossover I stuck with; it was a no-brainer to follow him to Alpha Flight and Incredible Hulk.

And then naturally to Superman.

I cannot tell you what my first Byrne was as I know I was too young to know
who he was and Marvel UK reprinted comics out of release order - so we
could well get US comics released in the 70s reprinted before comics that
were originally released in the 60s.
What I can say, is that my first memory of understanding comic creators,
was the reprint of JBs first X-Men issue which had the ‘Im still alive - Dave’
comment at the end.
I do have a memory of asking my various brothers who Dave was and none
of us having a clue. Only on rereads did one of us realise that it was Dave
Cockrum and he had been replaced by John Byrne.
So my first Byrne where I became aware of his name, was his first X-Men,
reprinted in a comic called ‘Rampage’

I can't say with absolute certainty because I was so young,  but "Avengers" #164 or "Marvel Team-Up" #55. Since I had older brothers,  most of the earliest comics I read were not something I bought from a store by myself.  I noticed something about the art even then, and I did notice the names in the credits.

The first comic book with JB art that definitely grabbed me was "Uncanny X-Men" #122. I loved the small details, like the holes left in the computer console in the Danger Room after Wolverine punctured it, and the way JB drew Wolverine's street clothes with these flowing wrinkles that suggested movement as he ran down a street. JB has a way of capturing little nuances that I did not find in the artwork of many other artists.

Not sure, but it was likely a late 70's U.K. distributed
Marvel Team-Up or Uncanny X-Men 113, which was definitely
my first X-Men.

Iron Fist 14, but I didn't get into differentiating artists and figure out who this John Byrne guy was until his FF run.  I don't remember exactly when I figured it out, but I do remember being super excited that he was drawing the X-men again in FF 250, even if they were Skrulls.

Marvel Premier #25

Tho not until the bombardment of Champions, MTU, Iron Fist and that solo DD all around the same time that I knew this was what I liked and wanted even more. That's when I checked the credits and found Byrne (pronounced Buy-urn in my head).

Never be sure…but I think it was a MTU. The issue that Wasp fought
Exuinox. I was a kid, but I read the cover off that thing.

I was definitely aware of JB's work prior, but the first
issue of Byrne work I actually bought would be Fantastic
Four 232, the Diablo issue.
