Al has sold this piece of art a long time ago. At least the seller shares some of the proceeds with Al. That's nice.

Is the first appearance of the Black Cat that big a deal?

The most I’ve ever spent for a single piece of comic book art was for the last page of FF 5, for which I was recently offered SIXTY TIMES what I paid.

There is a certain madness that’s fallen upon the collector market.

If that’s a million, then a cover for, say, Spider-Man #39 must be worth…
$29,000,000?

The seller did the right thing in giving a portion of the sale to the original artist. I can't imagine an artist letting a piece go for a few thousand just to have some money to pay bills only to see it years later going for a million!

Now they’ve gone and done it, huh?

JBF had a meltdown when John suggested this might be a good idea to
integrate into all original art sales. The very concept caused many longtime
members to burn their membership cards in front of City Hall.

Dave Cockrum died in near poverty while his X-Men art sold for hundreds of thousands of dollars. Art he’d sold for $50 or less.

Hey, good for him!  I do think Al Milgrom doesn't get enough credit for some truly solid, eye-catching covers.  And at this point, I can't imagine '70s & '80s comics without him!

Was he considered a "hot artist" at the time?  No.  But thinking about his artwork brings a smile to my face.  Great to see his work getting some love (& money)!

I think Al Milgrom's cover was pretty faithful to a layout by the Black Cat's designer, Dave Cockrum.
