Comments about this catastrophe, and Forum members it has affected, have been popping up across multiple threads. Seems like this is important enough to rate its own thread.

Proceed.

Grateful to be here. This is the biggest disaster I have been “part” of.

Our neighborhood looks like a war zone. It’s just gone.

I’ve been in Los Angeles for 36 years. This is the most devastating series of
fires I’ve seen and they aren’t over yet. Over 5,000 structures leveled /
damaged, many of them upscale. A perfect storm of super dry conditions
and very powerful Santa Ana winds have made containment impossible
though Hollywood (so far) got a massive break last night as winds abated
and a potentially apocalyptic firestorm in one of the most densely populated
areas of the city was (so far) avoided. Pacific Palisades, however, was not
lucky and is already the most expensive fire in California history with
absurdly high losses of property. I have one friend who lost his house of
nearly 40 years in less than an hour and multiple others who have had to
evacuate and do not yet know the fate of their homes.   I’m 20 miles away
but the air is very smoky and there are white ashes even now falling on our
balcony and cars, etc.

I’ve lived in LA for nearly 30 years and this is by far the worst fire in the area that I’ve ever seen.  Not even close.  The extent of the devastation is immense.  The lives forever changed, incalculable.  To have fires raging in all directions within ten miles from where I live is frightening.  Like Rick, I have friends who have lost homes.  To see the pictures is heartbreaking.  I’ve tried to put it into words over the last day, but they fail me in the face of such immeasurable loss.

I read that some homes don't have insurance.
Is that true?

That is true, yes.  Because of the enormous cost of covering so many fires over the last 5-10 years, many insurance companies have dropped their most at-risk customers.  This is not only a California thing, as the same is happening in Florida and Texas due to hurricanes.  It’s a serious issue not only for the lack of coverage, but the coverage many homeowners in areas deemed “high risk” are left with who face one of two choices; pay incredibly high premiums to the one or two insurance companies left, or go without.  Untenable. Something has to change.
