I have many weaknesses but I am known in my work environment for being very organised, very thorough, and just wanting to do things right.

One of my colleagues is more of a maverick. He gets things done and the end result is normally pretty good, but he admits to 'flying by the seat of his pants' most of the time.

He would definitely describe me as being not easy to work with.

 QUOTE:
Who has collaborated more than John Byrne? Those who have know what it
takes. But that’s a pretty elite group.

People who collaborate that much are not hard to work with.

You allude to something that's worth noting - If mikesamazingworld.com is anything to go by, JB is the #1 still-surviving artist in penciller page count. He's further down the list in Writer page count, but if you were to combine the two and rank writer/artist page count, he'd likely be the leader by a huge margin. Point being that with so much more output and creative control than most of the other creative folk in the industry, the odds grow of there being a "Bad Byrne Story" somewhere, even if they are false.

Probably also depends on who "worked with" him. Are we talking Editors(+-in-chief) or other roles? I haven't heard of other writers having a beef on books that he was just the artist on, and I've only read good stories from artists that worked with him as just the writer, such as JRjr putting him and Frank Miller as his favorite collaborations*. Since JB wore both hats, I could understand that process going more smoothly than other creative teams. JRjr specifically referenced that as a part of why he enjoyed the collaborations so much - with JB and Miller both being artists, they trusted his abilities enough to tell the story his way.

*I own a copy of one such interview, and the interviewer was pretty clearly trying to goad a "Bad Byrne" story out of him, but he gracefully retorted "That was not my experience with him".

I mentioned in one interview that I had given JRjr a plot that included a page that just said FIGHT!

Another writer responded that that wasn’t writing, it was typing.

Sure, I said, like I’m going to tell JR how to draw!!

They must not know about the seven times I’ve borrowed the cover of FF 1!
...........
I guess it's only considered an homage if you're sourcing someone else's work and not your own? Baffling ...

………..

I’ve never read anything to indicate John was unhappy with it.

Rational minds with some sense of boundaries would recognize that any
issues or acceptance would only involve John, John and the editor on the
book at the time.

I think the psychopathy behind Byrne bashing is vaguely interesting and (as
a fan) frustrating, but it’s so off base, contradictory and random that I’ve
come to think of it as a case where “John Byrne” is a stand in for something
else— like “my dad” if we want to get Freudian.

There’s a lot out there to complain about.

Blame John Byrne!

In response to Fred, Quite the contrary. In a profile piece from a few years back JRjr named Byrne as his favorite collaborator of those he’s worked with.

Yep, that's what I was referring to above. he loved being given just "FIGHT!" At that point in time of the interview, he was already in the industry nearly 30 years, and he's worked with a LOT of writers, so for him to single out JB and Miller as his favorites, that says something.

So at that point, that other writer has no other recourse than to STFU.

I found a different interview of JRjr complimenting JB: LINK

 JRjr wrote:
I remember John Byrne's first plot on "Iron Man" back in the '90s. I think it was two pages. He was so open to letting me to do whatever I wanted. I smiled at the compliment of it and because it was so much fun to work on. And then he put my name first in the credits. That's why I'll always be a fan of John Byrne. John Byrne was an artist first and working with him was a true pleasure. He's a great guy, a friend, a brilliant talent, but that was the most fun I'd had. When he sent me that plot and at the end said, "Knock yourself out." Some form of that process has played out over the years. That's a compliment when the writer will allow me to do what they want and they'll change on the fly, but I won't make them change anything.

Is that typically the way you've worked with other artists, or since many are less talented storytellers than Romita, do you sometimes find that you have to choreograph the fight for them?...or that they want more direction?
