The election of 1976 was the first one I remember.  I grew up in rural Ohio, and both sides of my family were farmers.  My elementary school was predominantly made up of farm kids.  We were all shocked when Carter won, and I vividly remember us all cheering when one of my classmates loudly declared, "Jimmy Carter is a pbbbt pbbbt [rasberry sound].  The next four years was a lot of making fun of Amy and Billy Carter.

It wasn't until years later that I understood what a great man Jimmy Carter was, how mostly worthless Ford actually was, and what a piece of shit Reagan was.

Carter truly led by example for 40+ years after his presidency was finished.
