One thing I noticed not long after I moved into this house is that every morning the pool cover is a tapestry of raccoon footprints.

As many of you most likely know, raccoons like to wash their food, and mine have figured out that if they walk out onto the cover their weight pushes them down to the level of the water.* The deer have worked out the same thing for drinking purposes.

* Altho I don’t use the pool, I was advised to keep it filled, so ground water won’t push it up and crack it. Fortunately, rain is all I need to accomplish this.

City boy here but we bought a house in the suburbs about a decade ago, and the property backs up to a whole lot of backwoods. We expected critters but not the variety we regularly see. Raccoons, skunks and possums weren't uncommon sights in the inner city where I grew up. But I still marvel when I see a turkey, fox or coyote on my back porch.

What initially surprised me even more was how unconcerned many of them were with us. The raccoons are fearless, of course and we've had many close encounters with them. Even the skunks though have become so used to humans that they'll walk right up to you, have a sniff, then go on their way casually. So far, we've all peacefully coexisted. But I did have a hard time finally convincing my spouse that he could not feed them.

Do you still have to treat it and keep it up or is it just a pond at this point?
