If you don't mind answering, JB, why was Jim Shooter against this? And how did he fail to get his way?

This was when the Whim of Iron had decided it didn’t like big shots of the villain on the last page. “That just turns the last page into an ad for the next issue!”

To which the universal response was “That’s bad…why?”

Fortunately, Archie Goodwin was EiC at this time, so sanity prevailed.

(I did, however, get a lecture from Shooter on this point. Amusingly enough, Shooter painted himself into this particular corner in SECRET WARS when Galactus [who shouldn’t even have been there], after lying unconscious for several issues, suddenly rose in what would surely have been worthy of a Kirby-esque splash. Instead, Shooter wrote it as a small panel of someone running through a door announcing “Galactus is on the move!”)

I was around 13 when SECRET WARS came out and I remember feeling that something seemed off about the end of that issue, as if a page got cut and the issue had to end unexpectedly early

Wow, what a gorgeous page. 

And what a price tag!

Do you think someday much of this original wonderful comic art that exists with private collectors will end up in a museum of some sort?

That page with Magneto is a classic! It was printed in swedish too. I was around 14-15 and attending drawing lessons for young people. Showed it to the teacher, who reacted positively. She liked the drama and the strong impression!

Absolutely iconic!  I know it was made for color, but Terry's zipatone work here makes it read better in B&W—still love it all the same.  Also, almost every time I see Jim Lee's Magneto I can't help but see this as its origin.  Look forward to seeing where the hammer price ends up!

Any page that is filled with a single image can be called a splash.
