Harris is running two parallel campaigns, one visible and one implied. One race is for President, the other is to try to reforge the GOP into a workable governing partner.

The latter she has to do from without, via multiple proxies. It all seems so exhausting - on the one side, she has to do the usual Democratic heavy lifting of mobilizing a fickle young and diverse base, and on the other she has to fight through a distortion field of hyper-partisan media noise to convince grown-ass adults not to sell our collective future down the river. The fact that these two factions have almost diametrically opposed views of America means she's had to engage in a high-wire act of messaging synthesis that's of course a little nubbly.

While I likely never would have become a Republican voter, the serious-minded party that I grew up with - the one that focused on national security and economic issues from a conservative position that I could understand, if not agree with - is gone. What's replaced their vision is a fevered nightmare of complete control, kind of like if Darkseid got the Anti-Life Equation and used it to remake the courts. Which I guess makes Tucker Carlson Glorious Godfrey?

So now the L.A. Times and The Washington Post editorial departments have backed down from endorcing Harris because of backlash from their billionaire owners.

These guys are fucking losers and cowards.

The sad thing is, they won't be the only news rags to turn tail and run because of the White Brains Grifter.

The Post motto for the last 6 years has been: Democracy Dies In Darkness.

They can now kiss my ass.

This is true…in part.  Although neither will be issuing an endorsement, the Editorial Departments of both papers did not back down.  Several high profile editorial editors and writers quit following the decision by the LA Times owner and the decision by WaPo was presumably made by Bezos but issued by the Publisher and Chief Executive Officer.  The departments of both papers did not, however, endorse this.  Both decisions came from above and the reaction to both has been swift, from within and without.

This is the statement from WaPo’s Editorial Writers:

The Washington Post’s decision not to make an endorsement in the presidential campaign is a terrible mistake. It represents an abandonment of the fundamental editorial convictions of the newspaper that we love, and for which we have worked a combined 275 years. This is a moment for the institution to be making clear its commitment to democratic values, the rule of law and international alliances, and the threat that Donald Trump poses to them — the precise points The Post made in endorsing Trump’s opponents in 2016 and 2020. There is no contradiction between The Post’s important role as an independent newspaper and its practice of making political endorsements, both as a matter of guidance to readers and as a statement of core beliefs. That has never been more true than in the current campaign. An independent newspaper might someday choose to back away from making presidential endorsements. But this isn’t the right moment, when one candidate is advocating positions that directly threaten freedom of the press and the values of the Constitution.

What profit a man to receive billions of dollars only to lose his soul?

One must possess a soul, before one can lose it.

Matt,

I get what you're saying and I believe in it most of it wholeheartedly.

But sticking with the Washington Post:

They plaster " Democracy Dies In Darkness ", as their motto, but from the top (Bezos) cannot endorse the candidate (Harris) that will not go down the path of a dictatorship.

Trump has said many times that he will be a dictator, send the military after American civilians, shut down news organizations that do not speak favorable about him, and rooting out "enemies of the state", but the media has not pushed back as hard as they should be doing.

I want to see the Robinsons,  the Milbanks, and the Ignatuis' of the media world to speakout against the Bezos' that now own the media. Not with just keystrokes, but on the airwaves.

Time for the country to split officially into two nations. Let the red states become Trumpland while the more populous, wealthier blue states become two parts bracketing the rest.

Trumf can become what he clearly craves: King Donald the First.

Then we can start building walls along those borders!

I did my civic duty and cast my vote this morning. I'm very proud to have given it to Ms. Harris.
